Yon Was a Resident of This Vicinity for Eighty Years. Suffering a paralytic stroke early yesterday morning, Mrs. Mary A. Yon, aged 90, died at 6:45 o'clock last evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. F. Neeter, of 23 Washington avenue. She was well and active until striken [sic], having spent the evening before her death visiting a neighbor across the street. Mrs. Yon was a resident of this vicinity for the past eighty years, her parents settling at Allegheny Furnace in 1838, when this region was still a wilderness. She was a young married woman when the first steam engine ran over the Allegheny mountains, and often told of the fright of many of the untutored people of this region when the shriek of the first steam whistle resounded through the valleys. She was born in Chester county, Pa., July 4, 1828, the daughter of William and Susan Walton. The family came to Allegheny Furnace when she was 10 years old, after having lived several years in Lancaster county. On April 22, 1846, she was married at Gaysport to Henry Yon, who preceded her to the grave. Mrs. Yon was a charter member of the Grace Lutheran church, of this city, and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary society to the First Lutheran church. She was also a member of G.A.R. circle No. 8. The aged lady was the last of her family, being preceded to the grave by twelve brothers and sisters. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. C. F. Neeter and Mrs. H. E. Leader both of this city, and Mrs. Catherine VanLear, of Reedsville, Pa. Mrs. Yon was the mother of twelve children and is survived by thirty-four grandchildren, sixty-three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, leaving the late home at 2.30 o'clock. Service will be held in the Grace Lutheran church at 3 o'clock, followed by interment in Fairview cemetery. Altoona Tribune, Friday, February 28, 1919, page 10
