At 10 o'clock yesterday morning Mr. Adolph W. Hayes, of Tyrone, and Miss Silvia Varner, of McAllisterville, were united in marriage by Justice of the Peace C. Irwin Lewis at his office on Allegheny street, the ceremony being performed in a quiet manner. The groom is to become a soldier in the army and will leave in a few days for a southern training camp. While he is away his bride will remain at her home in McAllisterville. Altoona Tribune, Wednesday morning, August 28, 1918, page 2 BECOMES A BENEDICT Early in the year, Adolphus W. Hayes of Tyrone enlisted in the army and was assigned to the Heavy Coast artillery and was sent away to Fort Moultrie, S.C. The other day he returned to Tyrone, on a few days furlough. But unexpectedly on Tuesday he absented himself for awhile and when he returned he came as a benedict, for at Hollidaysburg, he had the squire perform the ceremony that made him the husband of Miss Sila [sic] Varner of McAlisterville, Pa., and then on Wednesday he left again for his camp in South Carolina. Both young people are well known in Tyrone, and the wish is uppermost that the war may come to a successful conclusion at an early date, so that this young couple may again be united.
