Irwin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward C. Irwin, 1205 Fourth avenue, noted High school athlete, now a corporal in the Quartermaster corps of the U.S. Army, and Miss Clara E. Hite, of Pittsburgh, a childhood playmate, were married in Baltimore, Md., on Sept. 3, according to a message received by Mr. Irwin yesterday. Walter, considered the fastest basketball player of any High school in the state, and captain of Altoona High's famous championship team of 1916-17, went to school at Pergiomen seminary last year, and after the term closed, enlisted in the quartermaster corps, and was sent to Washington, D.C. where he was detailed for duty. Miss Hite, who graduated from the Altoona High school in 1916, but who for several years has lived in Pittsburgh, then left for Washington, where she secured a position as stenographer in the British Embassy. The parents of both young people knew that they were engaged, but the news of the wedding came as a complete surprise. On Sept. 3, the young couple slipped quietly away to Baltimore, where the Rev. J. J. Muir, of the Baptist church performed the ceremony. They are residing in an apartment at Washington and expect to remain there until Corporal Irwin is transferred to some other point. Mrs. Irwin is continuing her work at the British Embassy, her employers refusing to accept her resignation. Corporal Irwin is stationed at Fort Myers, Va., in the construction division of the quartermaster department. Altoona Times, Altoona, Pa., Wednesday Morning, October 2, 1918
