Compiled, published and copyrighted for the benefit and convenience of the citizens of Altoona and the business men of Central Pennsylvania, BY CHAS. B. CLARK, IN APRIL, 1890. N. C. Barclay & Sons, Steam Power Press Printers, 1890. BUSINESS DIRECTORY. ____________ CLASSIFIED. All who are engaged in any line of business are here classified together with the location of their place of business. Those in the smaller type were too economical to subscribe for a directory and thereby forced the publisher to use equal economy in the space given them. Though not usually spoken of as a Manufacturing City, Altoona is such, most decidedly, the great majority of her citizens being mechanics or intimately connected with the mechanical arts and manufactures. First and foremost among her manufacturing establishments are the shops of the PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD COMPANY, wherein are manufactured, or repaired every year, thousands of the best freight and finest passenger cars in the world, and hundreds of the largest and most powerful as well its most perfect locomotive engines. The machine shops or upper shops as they are usually called to distinguish them from the car shops or lower shops, are presided over directly by Master Mechanic G. W. Strattan. They are located in the triangular plot of ground bounded by Ninth and Tenth avenues, and Ninth street and Sixteenth street, the greater part of them being close to Twelfth street and between it and Sixteenth. These shops consist of three round houses, two erecting shops, two wheel foundries, a soft iron foundry, brass foundry, blacksmith shop, cab and tender shop, tin and sheet-iron shop, boiler shop, flue shop, a two-story lathe shop, a vice shop, wheel shop, telegraph shop, and air brake shop, a large storehouse, and office buildings. They have a floor surface of about twelve acres and occupy thirty-one acres of ground. 3,000 men are employed, and the monthly pay roll is nearly $200,000. A new engine costs about $9,000 to construct. THE CAR SHOPS, or lower shops, of which John P. Levan is General Foreman, are located along Chestnut avenue from below city limits to Seventh street, and occupy the space between Chestnut ave and the tracks of the main line P. R. R. on the line of Ninth avenue They include a large round house which covers over three acres of ground, including the circle of 400 feet diameter, which it encloses, which is not under roof, and in which is a 100 foot turn-table, run by steam power, on which two of the largest freight cars and an engine can be turned with ease. There are also two large planing mills, a blacksmith shop, plumber's shop, upholsterer's shop, hair-picking room, two paint shops, machine shop, truck shop (building iron car trucks), a cabinet shop in which the finest car furniture, etc., is made, a passenger car shop, freight car shop - which occupies the round-house principally - and a very extensive lumber yard, in which is piled all the time from 10,000,000 to 30,000,000 feet of the best lumber, of nearly all kinds, besides square timer - t0 to 100 men being constantly employed handling lumber. Nearly 2,000 men are employed in the car shops. East of the Car Shops are now building and nearly completed the JUNIATA LOCOMOTIVE WORKS, the shops and buildings of which occupy a tract of over 50 acres of ground, and will be one of the most extensive of its kind in the world, will employ 1,500 to 2,000 men, build many hundred locomotive engines yearly. They are the property of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, so far as the public is informed, and will doubtless add 10,000 to Altoona's population in a few years. THE ALTOONA IRON COMPANY, of which James Gardner is President, H. K. McCauley, Secretary; T. S. Gardner, Treasurer and Correspondent, and Robert Smiley, Mill Manager, have a large rolling mill just South of the city limits on the Hollidaysburg branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Allegheny station, where all kinds of merchant bar iron is manufactured. The capital stock of the company is $150,000, and the plant is valued at $175,000. 135 to 150 men are employed the year round. THE ALTOONA MANUFACTURING CO., (formerly car works), are located on Broad and Twenty-sixth streets at Southern limit of the city. They were first built in 1868, were burned down May 1879, but at once rebuilt and the company is now in a very flourishing condition. They employ about 150 men. They have no connection with the Pennsylvania Railroad except by their own tracks, and while they have the facilities for building cars and do make some freight cars, and repair cars for several coal companies, their principal business is that of a machine shop, the manufacture of castings, engines, and improved machinery, hoisting engines, &c., having every facility for the purpose. The officers of the company are: M. A. Green, President; E. T. Kerns, Secretary, and John Lloyd, Treasurer. THE PLANING MILLS of Altoona are among her leading manufacturing interests, and there are at present ten in successful operation, being kept busy in supplying the demand for manufactured and dressed lumber, doors, sash, blinds, &c., created by the building boom which began in 1879 and has continued unabated ever since. The planing mill of M. H. Mackey, which is located on Ninth avenue near Twelfth street, is complete in every detail, employs a large force of men and turns out the best of doors, sash, shutters, brackets, ornamental work, &c. Mr. Mackey also deals extensively in lumber, and contracts for buildings of every description. A few squares from these mills is that of Crum, Coll & Co., which is situated on Ninth avenue corner of Eighth street. This is a large mill, comparatively new, and well situated, being close to the railroad. On the corner of Green avenue and Eighth street is the planing mill of Ramey & Co., of which Fred Ramey is superintendent and manager. A well stocked lumber yard is kept in connection with this mill, D. K. Ramey, the senior member of the firm, having large tracts of timber land in the Cleafield district, and several saw mills, from whence the supply is drawn. Along the Hollidaysburg branch railroad, Ninth avenue and Twentieth street, is the large brick planing mill of William Stoke, one of the oldest planing mill men in Altoona, and widely and favorably known as a contractor and builder. The mill has been burned down several times, but always rebuilt immediately, and is now a large establishment, where all kinds of planing mill work is turned out in quantities. KLINE, PARKER & CO. do a large business in the building line and manufacture of worked and dressed lumber, their planing mill being located at Juniata and their office on Fourth street corner of Sixth avenue. WILL K. CALVERT has an extensive planing mill at Eleventh street and Twentieth avenue, where he is in position to furnish building materials to the coming inhabitants of the new suburb, Oakton. BUSHMAN & NOFFSKER are also engaged in the planing mill business and contracting and building, their mill and office being located at 1732 Margaret avenue. A. V. PRICE also has a small planing mill on the corner of Fifth avenue and Twenty-second street, where he manufactures doors, sash, shutters, brackets, &c., in considerable quantities. The manufacture of furniture is carried on by I. P. SHIMER, at his factory, near Margaret ave and Seventeenth street. And while speaking of manufactures it is not out of place to mention that of A. E. Goetz. Although he does not call it such he really does carry on a large clothing factory. In the Eleventh Avenue opera house building at the corner of Eleventh avenue and Eleventh street, he has over sixty employes constantly at work making clothing to order for the citizens of this and adjoining counties, where the word "Goetz" is synonymous with good clothing, made to fit, and at reasonable prices. THE CITY PASSENGER RAILWAY COMPANY, of Altoona, Incorporated March 10, 1882. John P. Levan, president, L. B. Reifsneider, Secretary and Treasurer; John J. Buch, Superintendent; Andrew J. Riley, Solicitor. Directors: John P. Levan, A. J. Anderson, C. A. Wood, Dr. C. B. Dudley, Andrew Kipple, David Koch, William Murray, Altoona; James Lowther, Bellwood; Max Liveright, Philadelphia. Capital stock, $68,000, all paid in. Length of line, including sidings, 3 miles, 2,674 1/4 feet. Cost of construction and equipment, $68,375. Number stables, shops and car houses, 4. Number cars, 18. Number horses and mules, 43. Number men employed, drivers and stablemen, 16 exclusive of officers. The capital stock has just been increased to $150,000 and contracts given out for extending the road from Chestnut avenue and First street eastward to Juniata, and from the present western terminus to and along Broad street to Millville, after which the motive power is to be changed to electricity, and the city will then have nearly eight miles of electric road, giving her citizens facilities for rapid transit to and from all important points and the suburbs. The silk mill which two years ago was in existence only in the minds of its projectors, is now an actual reality, a large brick structure at Ninth avenue and Twenty-sixth street, filled with the latest improved machinery and in full operation under the management of Frost & Sons, of Newark, N. J. It gives employment to over two hundred persons, mostly girls, women and boys. The manufacture of building brick to supply the growing demand for them, caused by the erection of new brick business blocks and fine houses, seems to have been greatly neglected, and they have been brought here in great quantities. Mr. J. R. Vaughn has been until lately the only one engaged in their production in Altoona, and his yard and kilns, though of large capacity, have been unable to supply half those used in the city. His works are located at Allegheny station on the Hollidaysburg branch, just south of city limits, where there is an excellent bed of clay for the purpose. The brick he makes are of good quality for the building purposes, and command a ready sale at good prices. There is now a yard near the Altoona rolling mill and another beyond Fairview. THE BREWERIES of Altoona represent a considerable amount of capital and furnish employment to several hundred men, directly or indirectly, and beverage for many thousands more. For locations see Business Directory. CARRIAGE FACTORIES. Of these there are three, H. K. Morse, Ninth street near Eighth avenue; J. H. Condon, Union avenue near Broad street, and the Star Carriage Works, Sixteenth street between Tenth and Eleventh avenues. These factories have every facility for building the best carriages and buggies - in fact all kinds of wheeled vehicles - and they do a considerable amount of work annually. Some foreign-made buggies are sold cheaper than they can be made here, but when their enduring qualities are taken in to consideration the home-made article is likely the cheaper of the two. THE BRUSH FACTORY, of The Altoona Brush Company (Limited), Samuel Lower, manager, on Green avenue, corner Eleventh street, is a new industry here. Mr. Lower does not carry on an extensive establishment, but the quality of his work is very superior, and he finds a ready sale for the entire product. THE HARPHAM COPYING COMPANY does a big business in a quiet way in copying and enlarging pictures. They have agents traveling in nearly all the Northern States, and copy on an average over 100 pictures per day, for which the agents get from $2.50 to $20.00 each, according to size and quality of work. The work done here is not excelled by any other house. MILLER'S BROOM FACTORY is on Eighth avenue near corner of Ninth street, and there are produced a considerable quantity of brooms, most of which are purchased by the railroad company. EDISON ELECTRIC LIGHT COMPANY, John Loudon, President; a. J. Anderson, Secretary; E. B. Greene, superintendent. Located on Tenth avenue between Eleventh and Twelfth streets. Began operations in December, 1886. Capital stock, $56,000. Station is equipped for 4,000 Edison lamps; 200 2,000 candle power arc lamps. Motors are supplied from this station for a large variety of work. MOUNTAIN CITY HEAT, LIGHT, AND POWER COMPANY, (electricity), John O'Neil, President; J. G. Davis, Secretary; E. C. Greene, Superintendent. Plant located on Ninth avenue between Ninth and Tenth streets. Capital stock, $50,000. Capacity of the four dynamos, 2,000 16-candle power lights, and 100 2,000 candle power arc lights. Building and Loan Associations. Of these Altoona has 25, as follows: ALLEGHENY B. & L.
