M. Sheardown, MD, youngest son of Rev. Thomas S. Sheardown, aged 25 years… He began the practice of medicine at Elmira, N. Y., where on the first call for volunteers, he enlisted in the N. Y. service as a private. The hardships were too great for him, and after suffering some three months with the typhoid fever he received his discharge and came to Tioga in in this county. There he again entered upon the duties of his profession and won the esteem and friendship of all who knew him. At the time of the last invasion of Pennsylvania he received the appointment of assistant surgeon in the U. S. Army, and joined the 107th Regiment Pa. Vols., and while engaged in curing for the sick and wounded at the hard fought battle of Gettysburg, disease fastened itself upon him, and after months spent in camp and hospital, be was transferred to the embrace of his fond parents, when, after lingering some three weeks, he took an affectionate farewell of friends, and committing himself to his Savior, he calmly and meekly passed from the battlefield of life, as we trust, to that world where wars and rumors of wars are heard no more forever.
