Battle; A. Warner & Co.; 1887 Bristol Township JOSEPH BURTON deceased, was born in Bristol in the house in which his daughter now resides and which has been occupied by five generations of Burtons. The pioneer of the Burton family was Anthony Burton, who came from England about 1660, and first settled where Bristol now stands. To him belongs the honor of giving Bristol its present name. He was an Episcopalian, but married a member of the Society of Friends. His family consisted of six sons and one daughter. The sons were members of the Society of Friends, while the daughter held to her father's faith. Therefore those that bear the name of Burton are mostly members of the Society of Friends. The family are among the influential and thrifty families of this county. Joseph Burton was born in 1779, being a son of John and Rachael (Satcher) Burton. He was the oldest of a family of seven children. He was reared on the farm, attended the common schools and made farming the business of his life. He died in 1858. He married Sarah Watson, who was born in New Jersey in 1772. She was of English origin and a member of the Society of Friends. She died in 1859. They were the parents of six daughters and one son: Ann, Rachel, Sarah, Joseph, Mary W., Martha, and Rebecca W., all members of the Society of Friends. Joseph Burton was a republican and was justice of the peace for forty years. Financially he was successful, and at the time of his death was the owner of 281 acres of valuable land.
