Battle; A. Warner & Co.; 1887 Durham Township JOHN L. RIEGEL manufacturer, P.O. Riegelsville, was born in New Jersey, May 1, 1819, and is a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Riegel, of Lower Saucon township, Northampton county. His father is a son of Mathias and Catherine (Kram) Riegel, and his mother's parents are John and Elizabeth (Lerch) Leidy. Our subject received his education in the common schools of New Jersey, and lived there until 1874, when he removed to Pennsylvania. He was married September 12, 1839, to Miss Elizabeth Shimer, who died in 1858. They were the parents of five children: Mary E., Eliza C., and Anna Martha, deceased; Benjamin and Sarah Jane, living. April 30, 1859, Mr. Riegel was married to Catherine Stover, who died in 1864. Three children were the issue of this union: one, a son, died unnamed, another son, William, died when two months old; a daughter, Ella E., became wife of Silas W. DeWitt, and died at the age of 20 years and 11 months, leaving a son, John Riegel DeWitt, now nearly six years old. March 28, 1865, he married Miss Lydia Stover, who died in 1873, and was the mother of the following: Clara M., Ida J., John and Laura May. On June 19, 1876, Mr. Riegel was married to Mary Easton, and has one child by this marriage, George E. Mr. Riegel has been a member of the Reformed church all his life, and in politics is a republican. He has been in active business as a manufacturer for forty years.
