  Pension Application Of John McDole [or McDowell], Natl Archives Microseries M804, Roll #__, Application #R6687
  Bucks County, Pennsylvania: Personally appeared before me, a Justice of the 
  Peace, in and for the county and state aforesaid, Ann Delany, who being first 
  duly affirmed according to law, doth depose and say: "That she was well 
  acquainted with Mary McDowell and her family, having lived a near neighbor to 
  her during her lifetime. At the time of the death of said Mary McDowell, which 
  took place on the 21st of April, 1840, she left the following children living, 
  and none others: Abraham McDowell, Charles McDowell, Hannah McDowell 
  intermarried with Charles Thomas, Samuel McDowell, Ann McDowell intermarried 
  with George Thomas, John McDowell and Sutphin McDowell." 31st day of April, 1853.
  
  Abraham McDowell was born on the 1st day of January, in the year 1782.
  Joseph McDowell was born on the 11th day of March in the year 1784.
     Died Octo. September 9, 1822. [Perhaps the Oct. was an error not crossed out.]
  Charles McDowell was born on the 1st day of December in the year 1786.
  Hannah McDowell was born the 27th day of December in the year 1788.
  Hannah Thomas departed this life January 15th, 1842, in the 54th [year?]
  Samuel McDowell was born 22nd day of September in the year 1791.
  Samuel McDowell departed this life Dec. 19th, 1843, aged 53.
  Ann McDowell was born the 5th day of  September in the year 1793.
  Ann Thomas departed this life January 18th, 1846, aged 52.
  James McDowell was born the 17th day of June in the year 1796.
  James McDowell departed this life the 10th day of September, 1801.
  John McDowell was born the 9th day of February 1799.
  Sutphin McDowell was born the 23rd day of March in the year 1801.
  Jorge J. Thomas departed this life June the 14th, 1841.
  
  Bucks County, Pennsylvania: "On this 29th day of 1851, Abraham McDole, aged 70 
  years, Charles McDole, aged 65 years, both residents of aforesaid county, and 
  Sutphin McDole, aged 50 years, resident of Montgomery County, and John McDole, 
  aged 54 years, a resident of Philadelphia, state of Pennsylvania, make the 
  following declarations: "That they are the only surviving children of one John 
  McDole, deceased, who was an officer in the Revolutionary War; the said McDole 
  first entered the service in the autumn of  1776 as lieutenant of a company of 
  volunteers commanded by one Captain Isaac Longsheth."
  
  "The company was raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania near the place of 
  residence of the said McDole. Marched into New Jersey, joined the army under 
  the Commander-in-chief, and was present at the Battles of Princeton and 
  Trenton. The said deponents have heard many persons say that the said McDole 
  was present in these two actions and have often heard the said McDole speak of 
  the fact in his lifetime. The said McDole was in service either in field or 
  garrison nearly all the time up to the close of the war."
  
  "In the spring of 1777 when the campaign again opened, he again took the field 
  and was again present at the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth 
  Courthouse, fought in the years 1777 and 1778. Said McDole remained in the 
  Continental service to the best of their knowledge, till the spring of 1780, 
  when he was commissioned a lieutenant in a company of foot in the first 
  battalion in the militia in the County of Bucks and state of Pennsylvania. The 
  said commission was ?renewed in May 1783. As an officer of the militia, he was 
  frequently called into service both in field and garrison, and so continued 
  until peace was concluded and he was discharged from further duty. The two 
  commissions dated the 10th day of May, 1780 and the 1st day of May 1783, are 
  hereunto annexed, as further evidence of the facts set forth."
  
  "These deponents have frequently heard the said John McDole in his lifetime, 
  relate the particulars of his service during the war, and until very recently, 
  the uniform he wore as an officer was in the possession of the family. They 
  have often heard him say that he stood beside the American soldier who shot the 
  Hessian across the Delaware River at Trenton, a fact well-known in history. The 
  soldier belonged to the same company as the said McDole and went from the same 
  neighborhood."
  
  "The said McDole was married to one Mary Sutphin in the year 1781 and died at 
  Bucks County, on the 23?rd day of December, 1807, not being entitled to any 
  pension during his lifetime. The said Mary McDole remained the widow of the 
  said John McDole up to the day of her death, which took place in Bucks County 
  the 21st of April, 1840",etc.
