Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: Union Publishing Co., 1896, p. 451-2 ____________________________________________________________ Nicholas EVANS NICHOLAS EVANS, superintendent of mines for the Lilly Coal company, is a son of John and Mary (Evans) Evans, and was born in Wales, December 3, 1859. His father, John Evans, a native of Wales, was born in 1825. He emigrated to America with his family in 1862, and located in Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, where he worked in the mines continuously until about 1881. In the latter year he embarked in the grocery business in Northumberland county, which he conducted successfully up to the time of his death in 1885. In politics he was a republican, and, while taking a normal interest in political affairs, was not an active politician. His marriage with Mary Evans (who still survives him, and now resides in Baltimore, Maryland) resulted in the birth of nine children, all of whom are living but one. Nicholas Evans was brought to this country by his parents when but three years old, and received his early education in the public schools of Schuylkill county. When but eight years old he was employed about the mines, and when fourteen years old entered the mines with his father to dig coal. He remained in the hard-coal district until 1885, when he removed to Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he worked in a blacksmith shop for two years. In 1887 he located in Lilly, this county, and, as superintendent of the Lilly Coal company, opened the mines which they operate near Lilly, and has since had charge of their interests in that locality. His long experience in the various mines renders Mr. Evans eminently capable to fill with satisfaction the responsible position which he now holds. Mr. Evans is a staunch prohibitionist, and takes a deep interest in all political issues. He is an active and consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which organization he occupies the office of steward, and is also secretary of the board of trustees. He is a member of Mount Tabor Lodge, No. 125, I.O.O.F. In 1882 he married Miss Lizzie Gunter, a daughter of Joseph Gunter, of Shenandoah, Schuylkill county.
