Hardesty, 1898, Volume II, p. 1183 ____________________________________________________________ William ADAMS A son of Peter and Mary (Gallagher) Adams deceased was born in Cambria County, PA Oct 23, 1838. He has been twice married, his first union being with Lizzie Herbert, daughter of Peter Herbert, who was born in 1839 and passed to her reward in 1881. The children of this marriage are as follows: Peter, John A., Charles, Mary A., Joseph, Vincent and Margaret P. He was again married in 1883 in Hartsdale, PA to Elizabeth Hughes. She was born in Cambria County, PA in 1837. She was a daughter of Edward and Mary (Barry) Hughes, no longer living. During the Civil War, our subject's patriotism was shown in all loyal directions. He was engaged in farming when he enlisted in February, 1865 at the age of 25 years as a private in Company E, 104th PA V.I.; he was ill with general debility but did not enter the hospital. He took part in one battle, Bermuda Hundred, the remainder of his service consisted of scouting, skirmishing, guard and garrison duty. He was honorably discharged Aug 25, 1865 at Portsmouth, VA. His wife's brother, P.F. Hughes, served in the late war. John and Bartholomew, brothers of his first wife were also in the service. Comrade Adams has been school director; he belongs to Col. Potts Post, No. 62; his occupation is that of farmer and his address is St. Augustine, PA.
