New York, Toledo and Chicago: H. H. Hardesty, 1898, Volume II, p. 1185 ____________________________________________________________ John A. ANSTEAD A native of Germany, was born Aug 10, 1825. His parents, both deceased, were Godfrey and Barbara (Yocum) Anstead. The maiden name of his wife, to whom he was married Aug 15, 1850, was Susan Berkbile. She was born in Somerset county, Pa., Dec 6, 1827, a daughter of Moses and Susanna (Fisher) Berkbile, deceased. The issue of this marriage is as follows: Joseph H., Isaiah, Rachel A., John A., Cyrus, Mary, dec., William, dec., Julia, dec., Frank, dec., and Maud. Comrade Anstead fought and suffered the hardships of army life as a soldier during the late war and enrolled Sept 6, 1862 as a private in Co. K, 14th Pa Cavalry. May, 1864 he was confined in hospital at Martinsburg two months, suffering with chronic diarrhea. August, 1864 he was furloughed for thirty days; this was extended to sixty days, and he returned to Winchester at the end of this time. In spring of 1865 he was detailed a Corp. at Fairfax C.H. one week. He was detailed in Dec., 1862, as Co. horse forger till March, 1863. He took part in several battles and was honorably discharged May 31, 1865 at Alexandria, Va. His wife's brother, Jeremiah served in Ind. Regt., and died of fever in service. Comrade Anstead had been supervisor, school director and councilman; he is living in retirement and his address is Johnstown, PA.
