Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: Union Publishing Co., 1896, p. 216-7 ____________________________________________________________ DR. L. S. LIVINGSTON, a successful young physician, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, who has won his way unaided by the influence of friends or relations, is a con of Alfred W. and Mary (Berkebile) Livingston, and was born in Conemaugh township, Somerset county, Pennsylvania, May 22, 1866. He is of Scotch-Irish extraction and his grandfather, Samuel Livingston, is a native and life-long resident of Somerset county. He was born in the year 1809, and is, therefore, eighty-seven years of age. Alfred W. Livingston, the father of our subject, was also a native of Somerset county, born April 6, 1841, and still resides there. He is a carpenter by trade, and has followed that trade, together with agricultural pursuits, all his life, excepting nearly three and one-half years spent in the Federal army. He belonged to company I, Fifty-fourth regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer infantry. He participated in a number of engagements, and was wounded at New Market. Throughout all the trials and hardships of the war, and, indeed, they were many, he bore himself bravely and courageously, and was honorably discharged from the United States service on October 10, 1864, at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. His marriage with Mary, a daughter of Peter Berkebile, resulted in the birth of ten children; eight sons and two daughters. April 24, 1890, Dr. Livingston and Miss Lavina Stutzman, a daughter of Stephen Stutzman, were united in marriage, and to their union one son, Robert Lloyd, has been born. Dr. Livingston was educated in the schools of Somerset county, and afterwards taught eight consecutive terms in the public schools of that county. In 1887 he entered the office of Dr. George Conrad, of Johnstown, under whose preceptorship he continued three years. The following year, 1888, he entered the Eclectic Medical institute, of Cincinnati, Ohio, from which he was graduated June 4, 1891; since which time he has been engaged in active and successful practice in Johnstown. In the autumn of 1893, in order to more thoroughly qualify himself for the practice of his profession he took a post-graduate course in the Polyclinic college, of Philadelphia. In addition to his general practice, he makes a specialty of the nose and throat, in which he has met with success. Dr. Livingston is a live, progressive young physician, and takes an active interest in every movement which has for its object the advancement and promotion of the science of medicine. He is a member of the Central Medical Association of Pennsylvania, and the Eclectic medical Association of the State. Dr. Livingston is not in the ordinary acceptance of the term a politician, but believing in pure citizenship, he takes an intelligent interest in local, state and national politics, such an interest as every citizen should take, and upon such an interest the safety of our nation depends. He affiliates with the Republican party, but has never aspired to office. He is a member of Speer Orr Camp, No. 14, Sons of Veterans, of Johnstown.
