Biographical and Portrait Cyclopedia of Cambria County, Pennsylvania. Philadelphia: Union Publishing Co., 1896, p. 473-4 ____________________________________________________________ JAMES M. NOTLEY, a general merchant and lumber dealer of Hastings, this county, is a son of John F. and Amanda E. (Jones) Notley, and was born near Cherrytree, Indiana county, Pennsylvania, January 15, 1864. The Notleys went to Ireland with King William, Prince of Orange, and, for services rendered the king, received a large tract of land in county Antrim, where they became prominent as land-owners, and where there is still a large and influential family. John F. Notley, grandfather, was born in county Antrim, where he married Miss Eliza Flanigan about 1816. In 1829, with his family, he emigrated to America. Setting sail from Dublin about March 24, he landed at Quebec August 8 of the same year, and started immediately for Albany, New York, where he left his family for a short time, while he went on to Burnside, Clearfield county, Pennsylvania. He located at Burnside, and removed his family to that place, but only resided there a short time, when he removed to Montgomery township, Indiana county, Pennsylvania, where he purchased a large tract of timber land, which he afterwards exchanged with Seth Kemp for the tract of land now known as the Notley homestead in Montgomery township, near Cherrytree, where he cleared a farm and engaged in farming and lumbering. Being a man of considerable enterprise and business ability, he was acknowledged as one of the most successful business men of his locality. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. To his union with Eliza Flanigan a large family of children were born, of whom five are still living: Robert, a farmer, of Missouri; Eliza, the wife of Jacob Ake, a farmer and hotel-man, of Gettysburg, Indiana county; John F., father of the gentleman whose name heads this sketch; James, deceased; William, deceased; Frank, who went west, and from whom nothing has been heard for many years; Robert, deceased; Ellen, deceased, who was the wife of James Dowler; and Charlotta, the widow of the late Jacob Bastrick. John F. Notley, father, was born in Ireland in 1828, and came to America with his parents when but an infant. He was reared on the farm, and educated in old subscription schools of his boyhood days. On reaching mature years he adopted farming as a means of gaining a livelihood, and became quite an extensive farmer and lumber-man, engaging in the latter business in connection with his agricultural pursuits. He now resides in Cherrytree, where he has practically retired from active business, and is enjoying the results of a well- spent life. He is a member of the Presbyterian church. He married Miss Amanda E., a daughter of D. E. Jones, formerly of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, late of Indiana county, and their union resulted in the birth of nine children, of whom but five are living: Elizabeth, the wife of F. B. Kemp; D. E., a lumber- merchant, of Cherrytree; R. F., a lumberman, of Hastings, this county; James M. and Cecelia, at home. James M. Notley's boyhood was spent on a farm, where he attended the common schools of his district. At the age of fifteen he entered the employ of his father, and assisted him in the lumber business until May, 1888. In the latter year he located in Hastings, where he opened a store, in which business he is still engaged. He conducts a general mercantile establishment, and in his stock will be found everything usually carried in a first-class general store. In addition, he is interested to some extent in the lumber business. In political affairs he supports the principles of the Republican party. On April 15, 1894, he was united in marriage with Miss Emma, a daughter of Robert McKage, of Cherrytree, and they have one child, John F.
