ROCKEFELLER, an enterprising and successful business man of Gallitzin, this county, is a son of Louis and Catharine (Campbell) Rockefeller, and was born near Red Paint furnace, Montour county, Pennsylvania, November 8, 1848. The Rockefeller family is of German extraction. John Rockefeller, grandfather, was born in New Jersey, and removed to Montour county, where he located on a farm, and engaged in agriculture all his life. He died in Montour county. His wife's name was Elizabeth, and they were the parents of the following children: Jacob, Michael, David, John, Louis, Joseph, Esther, Mary and Henry. Louis Rockefeller, father, was born in Montour county in 1823. He is a farmer, and now resides near Kline's Grove, Northumberland county, Pennsylvania. The mother of our subject is a daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth Campbell, and was born in Northumberland county in 1828, and, with her husband, is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. They are the parents of ten children: Joseph, deceased; Lemuel C.; Sarah; Isabella, deceased; Harriet; Charles; Isaac; David; Oliver and Emory. Lemuel C. Rockefeller was reared on the homestead farm, and educated in the public schools of Northumberland county. After finishing the common-school course, he entered the High School at Kline's Grove, from which he graduated in 1869. On leaving school he learned the trade of a carpenter and wheelwright, which he followed until 1877. In the latter year he engaged in mercantile business in Sunbury, Northumberland county, and, after five years' successful experience in that field, he engaged in the bottling business at the same place until 1890, at which date he removed to Gallitzin, this county, where he continued the bottling business. He has been very successful in this line, and is agent for the Bartholomew company, of Rochester, New York. He is a careful and prudent business man, and has built up a remunerative trade. December 22, 1886, Mr. Rockefeller was united in marriage with Miss Harriet R., a daughter of Oliver McClow, of Sunbury, and their marriage has been blessed in the birth of three daughters; Catharine, Mary and Margaret.
