And the said John Sherriden makes report and registry as follows, Birthplace, France, Age, 30 years, Nation and Allegiance, France, Place whence he migrated, Havre de grace, Place of intended settlement, Cambria County. [page 238] September Term 1844 Petition of John Sherriden for Naturalization To the Honorable the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas of Cambria County, The petition of John Sherriden, Humbly sheweth, That your petitioner is a native of France, and was heretofore a subject of Louis Phillipe, King of France, that he had resided within the limits and under the Jurisdiction of the United States for five years, (three of which time was previous to his attaining the age of twenty one years,) and within the State of Pennsylvania one year, that he herewith presents his declaration of intention of becoming a citizen of the United States in the manner required by law, that he will support the Constitution of the United States, and that he doth absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure forever, all allegiance and fidelity to any prince potentate and sovereignty whatever, and particularly to Louis Philippe King of the French of whom he was heretofore a subject. Your petitioner therefore prays that he may be admitted a Citizen of the United States. John Sherriden (in German) I John Sherriden do swear that the facts set forth in this my petition are just and true, that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and that I do absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate and sovereignty whatever, and particularly Louis Philippe, King of France of whom I was heretofore a subject. We James McMullen and Arthur McDermitt Citizens of the United States and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania do swear that the petitioner John Sherriden has resided within the limits and under the Jurisdiction of the United States five years, (three of which time were previous to his attaining the age of twenty one year) and within the State of Pennsylvania one year, all of which time he lived in Cambria County, and that during his residence in the United States he has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the Constitution of the United States and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same.
