Brandle is killed by auto Resident of South Altoona Run Down By Car Driven By Richard J. Zavitz at Llyswen on Sunday Struck by an automobile in front of the Llyswen garage at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Joseph F. Brandle of 3510 Fifth Avenue, a coremaker employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, received injuries which resulted in his death a short time later as he was being taken into the Mercy Hospital. The car which struck him was driven by Richard J. Zavitz of 921 Twenty third Avenue. Zavitz was turning from the roadway into the garage and Brandle and his son were on the sidewalk in front of the garage and did not see the car, with the result that both were struck and knocked down, the elder man being thrown violently against the garage. Mr. Brandle and his son Herman had been out through Llyswen for a walk and were on their way homeward when the accident occurred. Zavitz was accompanied by M. G. Irvine of Llyswen who has an interest in the Llyswen Motor Car Company, and they had driven to Hollidaysburg. Herman Brandle sustained only a contusion of the leg and with the occupants of the car and G. J. Armstronng, who was passing, picked up the older man who was unconscious and bleeding from a wound on the back of the head. He was placed in the car and hurried to the Mercy Hospital, but died as he was being carried into the hospital, his skull having been fractured, while his neck was fractured below the base of the skull. The younger Mr. Brandle asserts that he and his father heard no warning of any kind and is certain that the driver did not sound his horn, while the car swerved rapidly around the turn and collided with them before they had an opportunity to step out of the way. On the other hand, Zavitz and Irvine claim that the car was running slowly and that the horn was sounded. Mr. Brandle had been employed for many years as a coremaker at the South Altoona Shops of the Pennsy Company. He was born in Germany in 1865 and came to this country when only 4 years of age. He had resided in this city for the past thirty years. He is survived by his wife and six children, as follows: J. F. Brandle of Baltimore; G. A., Herman, and Louis at Home; Mrs. Marie Langguth of this city and Miss Charlotte at home. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Tressie Wolfe of Altoona and one brother Frank of Johnstown. Mr. Brandle was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, this city and the Pennsy Relief. The funeral will take place on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock with requiem mass at the Sacred Heart Church at 9 o'clock with interment in the St. Mary's Cemetery. The funeral will be held on Wednnesday morning at 6:30 o'clock when the cortege will leave the house, 3510 Fifth Avenue. Requien mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church at 9 o'clock. Interment will be made in St. Mary's Cemetery. Coroner W. T. Blackburn announced today that he would hold an inquest at a time to be fixed later. m. I beleive is listed as Albert, but the birth date is Oct. 1883, 17 yrs. old. Should be Oct. 1882, 18 yrs. old. Joseph G. obit has born Oct. 1882. 1910 Census has Albert Jr. 15 yrs. 1920 Census has Albert 25 yrs. 1930 Census has Albert 35 yrs. But why isn't he listed on 1900 Census? There is a Joseph listed on 1900 census as born Sep. 1894, 5 yrs. old. Is this Joseph really Albert? There is no record of another Joseph, other than Joseph G. in census records. To add to this confusion, Mary (Urich) Greiner, in the 1900 Census is listed as having 5 children, 4 living. In the 1910 Census she has 10 children, 8 living. This is what I do know. Albert Greiner and Anna Brandle had at least 4 children. Albert than had at least 10 children with 2nd wife Mary Urich. There are 12 Male Greiners listed in Dick Clarks 1890 Directory, Altoona. Brandle, Penn Edison Foreman, Touches 2,3000 volt Circuit in Company Building Basement- Efforts To Revive Victim Are Futile- Fellow Workers Use Methods of Resuscitation For Long Period- Was Engaged in Renovating Switch. George A. Brandle, 48 year old foreman for the Pennsylvania Edison company and residing at 834 1/2 Sixteenth Street died of electric shock after he touched a 2,300 volt circuit at 6:45 o'clock this morning while working in the basement of the Penn Edison building, Eleventh Avenue and Twelfth Street. Efforts were made to revive the victim with more than a dozen engaging in methods of resuscitation for four hours but their efforts proved futile when at noon a physician pronounced the man dead. Brandle, foreman of underground operations for the utility concern, was engaged with his helper, Bernard R. Donnelly, age 38 of 558 Fifty-fourth Street, in renovating an automatic switch in the sub station vault located in the basement of the company business building. Apparently unmindful of any danger, Brandle removed a rubber glove from his right hand just before he attempted to reach over the top of the switch to mark one of the circuits. However his hand came in contact with the terminal of the 2,3000 volt circuit, the full charge of which passed into his body. Victim Slumps Over Donnelly, standing at his foreman's side, saw Brandle slump over. Donnelly caught him, as he fell and immediately began efforts to revive Brandle. Meanwhile, other workers learned of the accident and joined in the resuscitation efforts. An inhalator also was pressed into service. Paul R. Kuhn, safty engineer of the Pennsylvania Edison company, arrived at the scene within a few minutes after the accident and directed the life saving methods on the victim. Donnelly in his version of the fatality, said Brandle and himself started to work at 6 o'clock this morning in renovating the switch and also changing over the two undergroud feeders connections in the sub-station vault. Coroner Chester C. Rothrock joined with Mr. Kuhn in investigating the fatality but was undecided whether he would conduct an inquest. Native of This City George Albert Brandle was born in Altoona on Sept. 26, 1889, a son of Joseph and Rose (Colebaum) Brandle and had been employed in the local railroad shops. A year ago, on his birthday, Sept. 26, he married Miss Martha Jean Chatman. Surviving are his wife, his mother Mrs. Rose Brandle Steckler of the city; three brothers and two sisters: Frank Brandle of Philadelphia, Louis of Swissvale, Herman of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Dan Evens and Mrs. Marie Langguth, both of the city. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Known to his many acquaintance as Patsy, he formerly participated in baseball activities in this city, playing in the Pennsy Clerks league at the Cricket Field as early as 1910. He played with the General Office team. He also was a player in the P.R.R. Shop-mens league which operated mid week and Saturday baseball at Gamble hill in 1913 and 1914. Mr. Brandle also played as second baseman for the Pennsy Machine Shop and Car Shop teams in former years. m. Margaret About 1917 b. About 1887 in Pa. 2nd Marrige of George Albert Brandle m. St. Mary's Cemetery Sec. 4, Altoona obit. Altoona Mirror dated Saturday, December 10, 1910 page 12 column 1 Joseph Francis Brandle Jr. died at 6:05 this morning at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Francis Brandle of 2314 Fourth Avenue, of pneumonia. He was born in Altoona, September 1, 1896. He is survived by his parents, four brothers, Frank, Herman, Louis and George, and two sisters, Marie and Charlotte, all at home. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and attended St. Mary's School. He was a bright lad, liked by everyone. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock on Monday morning. Mass to be said at Sacred Heart Church. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery. Note: On the piece of paper I had for 20 some years with the names of my great grandfather family on it, Joseph Jr.'s name was the first of the childrens name listed. He having died of pnuemonia. I thought he was the oldest child. I was wrong. From my research I've learned that at that point in time they rarely named the first son after the father. When I finaly visited Altoona in July 2002, the first place I went to was St. Mary's Cemetery. It is located on a hill on the north end of the city. I started to walk the rows of stones at the bottom of the hill working my way up. I had a stone wall up ahead of me and I couldn't see anything beyond it. I was getting upset because I couldn't find any of the many family members buried there. I finally reached the wall and saw the larger part of the cemetery going up the hill ahead of me. Wow. I had already walked the bottom in the sun, twice, for about an hour and a half. Nothing to do but go onward. If you have ever walked a Cemetery in the hot summer sun looking at stones for names, you know how I felt. I was know into the older stones, many unreadable, so I walked each row twice, the cemetery being twice as wide up here. After an hour I cheated and looked farther up the hill and saw Brandle. I ran to the spot. It was George Brandle's stone. He died in 1937 but his stone looks brand new, it being granite. An older stone was two grave sites to the right. A tall stone made of sandstone, badly worn, hard to read. "Is this George, Walburga, Joseph Sr. I thought. At that moment the sun hit the top of the stone just right and I could see that it was the marker for this young boy. The young boy whose death had broken a number of hearts I'm sure. I knelt down on his grave and at my knees was a plastic red carnation. It sits on the computor in front of me now, along with the pink one I found on my great grandmothers grave, Harriet Rebecca Alcott, in Hatboro, Bucks Co. Pa. After a while I got up and continued the search. I didn't find Ida Rose Kahlbaum, or any of the other grave sites that I so wanted to find. But, I did find some. After walking the cemetery, three times, five hours, I sat down with George and Joseph Jr. and finaly turned to see the beautiful valey that had been behind me all day. A day I'll never forget. I know this to be true. I will meet you Joseph Jr. around the throne one day and what a glorious meeting it will be...... thank you Jesus. 6. Charlotte Brandle 5?
