Friday, 8 Jun 1906 Volume 40, Number 22 Items Local and Personal Miss Fannie Lloyd is visiting friends in Johnstown. Mr. and Mrs. James will live on Water Street where they have already furnished a home. Mrs. S. Lemon Reed and Miss Margaret Snedden of this place went to Johnstown on Monday. J. K. Resetar, the well known justice of the peace of Susquehanna township, was in Ebensburg Monday. W. A. McGuire returned from Pittsburg Monday where he had been several days last week on business. Mr. Ronald Darragh and his two sisters, Misses Bessie and Rosalind of this place went to Johnstown on Tuesday in their automobile. Mr. James C. Murry, formerly a resident of this place, now of Cresson township, was a visitor in the county seat Wednesday. Mr. Peter Delozier, one of Coupon's representative businessmen paid us a pleasant call Wednesday while in town on business. Misses Josephine and Hortense Dunegan of St. Augustine spent several days at this place as the guest of their sister, Mrs. A. E. Bender. Mrs. William Smith of Aspinwall was a visitor at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Huntley of this place during the past week. Mrs. Charles White and son and sister-in-law, Miss Clara White, are the guests of Mrs. White's parents, Dr. and Mrs. T. J. Davison of Julian street. Joseph Bearer, one of Spangler's prominent citizens, was among the Ebensburg visitors Tuesday and paid THE FREEMAN office a pleasant call while in town. Mr. Willis Davis, who taught at the Nicktown school the past winter has accepted a clerkship in the drug store of E. James and Son at the corner of Center and High Streets, this place. J. G. (Bob) Lloyd, the well known politician who has been confined to his home in the East ward for some time, is now able to be about on the streets again. His many friends are glad to see him out. Leo Little, who has been stenographer in the law office of his brother, Attorney P. J. Little for some time, expects to leave in the near future to enter the Western University of Pennsylvania at Pittsburg to take a course in dentistry. Attorney J. F. McKenrick of this place departed Saturday for New Haven, Conn., where he will attend the National Convention of the Knights of Columbus being held at that place this week, as a delegate representing the local order. Misses Annie Conrad, Bertha Sharbaugh and Thelma and Bert Sharbaugh and his daughter, Miss Mildred, all of Carrolltown, were guests at the home of Attorney and Mrs. F. C. Sharbaugh of Crawford street, over Sunday. Henry J. Eckenrode of Carroll township was in Ebensburg on business Monday. Mr. Eckenrode has a large acquaintance throughout the county and a number of his friends are advising him to be a candidate for the nomination for Sheriff at the Democratic convention to be held sometime in the near future. A. J. Darragh of the West ward mourns the loss of some fine chickens and ducks that were stolen from the hennry at his place some time Saturday night. Last year persons who are as yet unknown visited the same coop and appropriated all the chickens in the place. Mr. Darragh now has a shot gun for the next fellow who invades his chicken yard. Miss Eva O'Neil, sister of the Rev. Father O'Neil, pastor of the Church of the Holy Name, this place, has entered the Convent of the Little Sisters of the Poor, Pittsburg. Miss O'Neil had been keeping house for her brother since his coming to Ebensburg some time ago and while he was located at Conemaugh. She went to the Smoky City a couple of weeks ago but that she had entered the convent did not become generally known until lately. Late News of County John Thomas, a prominent Cambria township farmer who lives on the Carrolltown road near the North Congregational church, is seriously ill with Bright's disease. Mr. Thomas is about 57 years old. Max Schurman, a Spangler merchant, who also has a store at Possum Glory has become bankrupt and was before Attorney Horace R. Rose of Johnstown, referee in bankruptcy for examination. Lester Larimer of this place was appointed trustee. Edward Owens Ill Edward Owens, a venerable resident of Ebensburg is seriously ill at his home in the East ward of the county seat. Mr. Owens is 78 years of age and is a veteran of the Civil War. He is the father of County Commissioner, John Owens. Later reports indicate that Mr. Owens is somewhat improved. Accident at Cresson On Tuesday evening at about 10:30 o'clock as A. B. O'Hara of Cresson was driving a team of horses over the Pennsylvania railroad crossing at Cresson, he was struck by an empty engine and very narrowly escaped death. His horses were killed and the carriage was wrecked but fortunately Mr. O'Hara escaped with a few slight bruises although he had to be released from the wreck. The horses and carriage were valued at $600 and were the property of the Cresson Livery company. Poisoned by Eating Meat Ebensburg Girl becomes Violently Ill after Consuming Small Piece of Bologna A little daughter of Joseph Urda of the West ward became violently ill one day this week from eating a piece of bologna. The girl, in the evening, ate a small piece of the stuff and about 11 o'clock that night became violently sick. An effort was made to secure a physician but without success. Local antidotes were administered and after sometime she became better. After all that has been said in the newspapers since the investigation of embalmed meats people cannot exercise too much caution in consuming such products. Veterans Encamped at Altoona Altoona, Pa., June 6 The 31st annual encampment of the G. A. R. of Pennsylvania was opened here last night with a campfire in the Eleventh Avenue opera house which was packed. The Hon. J. D. Hicks presided. Mayor Walker welcomed the delegates and the response was delivered by Department Commander J. Andrew Wilt of Towanda.
