Friday, 12 Oct 1906 Volume 40, Number 41 Items Local and Personal Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Dick spent Sunday in Blairsville with J. L. Bowman and family. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Denny of Ebensburg were guests at the Crystal Hotel, Johnstown, Friday. A. J. Waters, Esq., of Ebensburg was registered at the Capital Hotel, Johnstown, Thursday night. Mr. Thomas G. Davis of the West ward was away this week attending the funerals of two relatives. Mr. and Mrs. John J. Evans spent Sunday with their daughter, Mrs. Edward Howells in Johnstown. Mr. and Mrs. S. Lemon Reed and Mrs. Thomas Osborn of Ebensburg were the guests of Johnstown relatives last week. E. J. Humphreys of Ebensburg was in Johnstown on Wednesday of last week, being registered at the Merchants' Hotel. Mr. E. F. Black, a former resident of this place, but now of Pitcairn, is visiting his daughter, Mrs. James McBreen in this place. Mr. Earl Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. A. Jones, of this place, departed recently for Philadelphia to resume his studies in dentistry. Chestnuts are plenty and were offered at 10 cents per quart on the streets Tuesday. They have about all been picked in the woods by this time. Mrs. Owen James of Johnstown and Mrs. W. H. McCreary, who were delegates to the Baptist Association here last week, visited Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jones. Wallace Plummer, formerly of Summerhill, has purchased a large grocery store at Wilmerding and will shortly remove his family from Cresson to that place. Word from Kane is to the effect that Mrs. Lemuel Davis who has been very ill with blood poisoning is improving and is expected to be well again ere long. This will be gratifying news to her many old friends here. Harry Pruner, the well known painter, has leased the room in the Hutchinson block, formerly occupied by Richard Davies, in which he will install a complete supply of wall paper. Steward Thomas J. Hughes of the Almshouse and E. H. Davis, Esq., Solicitor for the Poor Board, departed this week for Warren to attend the State Convention of Poor Directors to be held there. They will also visit Kane before returning home. Constable Brolley of Cresson last week brought an Italian named Srol to this place and lodged him in the county jail on the charge of larceny. Srol had been caught in the act of purloining goods from several stores in Cresson and alleged missing articles were also found at his home. Items of Interest Alex Strittmatter, Democrat nominee for the assembly, was in town on Monday on business. Mr. James A. Donahue of St. Augustine was a welcome caller at this office Tuesday. Mr. Donahue has sold his farm near St. Augustine and will shortly depart for a tour through the southern states where he expects to locate permanently. Serious Fall of Lilly Man William Meehan Tumbles from Chestnut Tree to Ground, Forty Feet Below May be Internally Injured William Meehan, a resident of Lilly, lies at his home in a badly bruised condition as the result of a fall he had late Wednesday. Mr. Meehan was shaking chestnuts from a tree when the limb he was standing on broke. He was leaning over at the time, and started head first on his downward plunge, about 40 feet. He struck his chin on a limb, however and hit the ground, feet first. His jawbones are so badly shattered and his legs were almost forced up through his body so that it is feared he may be internally injured. Cresson School is Closed Owing to the many cases of scarlet fever in Cresson, the Keystone Avenue school was closed Tuesday. The other schools may be closed later, unless the situation improves very soon. The Rev. Craig Goes to Missouri The Rev. Samuel G. Craig, pastor of the Ebensburg Presbyterian church, has gone to Tarkin, Mo., where he will remain about three weeks visiting at his native home. During his absence there will be no preaching services at the Presbyterian church. The church is now undergoing some important improvements which will add materially to the appearance when completed. The Christian Endeavor society of the Congregational church will hold a social in the church parlor on Halloween to be known as a "Halloween Social." Wilmore Lady Stricken with Paralysis Recovers Sight and Hearing Mrs. William Skyles of Wilmore, aged about 65, who was stricken with paralysis three weeks ago has recovered her sight and hearing. Her left side was affected and for a fortnight after she received a stroke, she could neither see nor hear. Dr. O. W. Sadler of the Washington apartments attended her. Cresson Telephone Girl Ill Miss Joan Williamson, an operator in the Cresson branch of the Huntington & Clearfield Telephone company, is off duty owing to illness. Hunting Party to Maine This Friday, Messrs. P. J. Little and Robert Scanlan, of this place and J. H. Dougherty of Dysart and Don O'Connor of Harford, Conn., will depart for the wilds of Maine for a Moose hunt lasting a couple of weeks. Judge O'Connor will not be one of the party but will go up into New Foundland with another expedition for caribou. We extend best wishes for success to the hunters and will be satisfied with the saddle of a moose for ours. License is Transferred Upon petition presented by Attorney J. Wallace Paul, Judge O'Connor last week granted a transfer of the liquor license held by Charles McGarvey, lately deceased, in Tunnelhill to Mr. McGarvey's widow, who is Administratrix of the estate. Windber Child Killed While Nellie Rogan of Windber, a six-year-old girl, was picking coal on the tipple at Berwind-White mine No. 31 Saturday noon, she was run down by a trip of cars and so badly injured that she died within a few minutes. Wilford Shoemaker Wilford Shoemaker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Shoemaker of Chicago, died at the family residence in that city, Monday, aged 16 years. The father is superintendent of the Spangler Brewing company at Spangler, this county.
