Friday, 26 Apr 1907 Volume 41, Number 17 Local and Personal Duncan Sanford and wife of Patton were here Sunday visiting Mrs. Mary Eckenrode, Mrs. Sanford's mother. On the 1st of May, Mr. and Mrs. Sanford will take up their residence in Philadelphia where Mr. Sanford has accepted a position. Mr. Will Bates and family of Williamsport stepped off enroute to California where they expect to make their home, to visit their relatives, M. D. Kittell and family, Mrs. Collins and Miss Blanche Henry. Mrs. Bates is well known here, being a sister of Miss Henry. Captain Tom Davis who has been ill for some time but was slowly regaining his health, had an attack of weakness Wednesday. At the time of going to press, however, his condition is reported considerably improved. County Surveyor John L. Elder and Attorneys William A. McGuire and Charles Hasson of Ebensburg were in Johnstown on business Saturday. They were registered in the Capital Hotel. Sister Bernadine and Sister Lucile of the order of St. Joseph, Pittsburg, sister and niece of M. D. Kittell, Esq., spent several days in town this week. Landlord Kimball of the Metropolitan has had painters and paper hangers renovating the interior of the hotel. Miss Alice Maloney of the Centre ward has returned home after a month's visit with friends at Cleveland, O. Mrs. Charles Port of this place left Tuesday for a month's visit with her parents and other relatives at her former home in Fort Wayne, Ind. Mrs. Annie Bunn who has spent the winter in eastern Pennsylvania returned home the last of the week. The valuable jersey cow owned by Harry A. Englehart died Wednesday from unknown causes. George H. Roberts, who has spent the winter in Philadelphia, returned to town Wednesday. Ex-Judge A. V. Barker of Ebensburg who has been laid up for several days suffering from lumbago is about again. Mrs. E. R. Dunegan of St. Augustine is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. A. E. Bender. T. F. Callan of Cresson was in town the early part of the week. Cresswell Estate Deceased Left Property Worth $200,000 When the will of the late Frank A. Cresswell was admitted to probate on Saturday by Register and Recorder Arthur Griffith it was found that the estate of the deceased will aggregate land holdings valued at over $200,000. The will had been drawn by Attorney M. R. Stephens during the week the deceased Mr. Cresswell lived after his return from California. Mrs. Frank A. Cresswell and Attorney Robert E. Cresswell are appointed Executors and in the case of the death of one of them, Miss Ella B. Cresswell will succeed. Robert Sagerson and Mrs. Alice Parks witnessed the will. It is stipulated in the will that all of the real estate of the deceased in Cambria County shall go to his legal heir, subject to the dower right of his wife. These properties include a large share of Roxbury Park house on Sherman street, Johnstown, and coal holdings in Jackson township. Mrs. Mary Cresswell is to receive two-thirds of the personal property and Miss Ella B. Cresswell one-third. The 1,500 acres of coal land in Indiana county are to be divided between Robert E. and Ella B. Creswell. Numerous other bequests including one to the Catholic church are made in the codicil. Lunacy Commission Appointed Ebensburg, April 23 On petition of Edward H. Knee, warden of the Cambria county jail, Judge O'Connor this evening appointed Dr. F. C. Jones, Attorney William A. McGuire and Robert Cassidy, a commission in lunacy to inquire into the mental condition of Mrs. Cralk of Bakerton who has been confined in the jail here for several days. Brakeman Sues for Damages Robert J. Wilson of Patton has entered suit at Ebensburg against the New York Central & Hudson River railroad, asking damages in the sum of $25,000 for the loss of his right leg while he was at work for the company. Wilson was employed as a brakeman by the company and received the injury on August 1, 1905. Russell Leech in Hospital Popular Ebensburg Lad Who Had Been Attending School at Mercersburg Undergoes Operation in Philadelphia Hospital Monday Afternoon District Attorney and Mrs. James W. Leech were summoned to Philadelphia Sunday morning through the serious illness of their son, Russell, who is attending school at Mercersburg. They were accompanied by Dr. F. C. Jones, the family physician. Upon reaching the Quaker City it was found that Russell was suffering from appendicitis and the physicians decided upon an operation. The lad was accordingly removed to a Philadelphia hospital where he withstood the operation very well Monday afternoon. Reports sent to the family and friends in Ebensburg state that Russell is resting easily and his early recovery is anticipated. Mr. and Mrs. Leech will remain in Philadelphia at the bedside of the patient for some time. Has Appendicitis Son of Prothonotary Troxell will Undergo Operation in Day or Two Ralph Troxell, son of Prothonotary C. E. Troxell of Reade township, is suffering seriously from an attack of appendicitis. It is probable that an operation will be performed within a day or two. Maurice Miller Loses by Fire Fire of unknown origin Thursday evening resulted in the destruction of the tailoring department connected with Maurice Miller's clothing house in Johnstown and damage by water of a large amount of stock on the first floor. Mr. Miller has not yet estimated his loss, but it is believed it will reach $15,000. Whatever the figures, they will far exceed the insurance, according to Mr. Miller. Attorney Reese to Wed The approaching marriage of Attorney William P. Reese of Johnstown, one of the most prominent members of the Cambria County Bar, and Miss Olive A. Dibert of San Francisco, has been announced. The date of the wedding has not been made public although it will likely take place in the early summer.
