Cravatta Guilty in Second Degree - Extracts Italian Who Shot Fellow Countryman at South Fork Gets Higher Degree Than Expected May Ask for new Trial In court Thursday afternoon the jury which tried Nick Cravatta of South Fork for the murder of Severia Divito at the big coal town Aug. 29 last, returned a verdict finding Cravatta guilty of murder in the second degree. [snip] Davis Gets Long Term In one of the most terrific scorings ever delivered from the bench of the Cambria County Court, Judge O'Connor Monday sentenced George Davis of Conemaugh to serve 29 years and six months in the Western Penitentiary at hard labor and added that if Davis ever hoped to be released from the penitentiary he must do so through the pardon board. Davis is the Conemaugh man charged with incestuous rape upon the persons of his two daughters, 12 and 14 years of age. The crimes continued over a number of months, it is said, but were finally discovered by the children's grandmother. Davis fled from Conemaugh but was later arrested in Ohio. Last week the grand jury returned true bills against him and Monday the fellow appeared in court and pleaded guilty. Davis, who had nothing to say following imposition of the sentence, is about 45 years of age. For good behavior he will get from nine to ten years off on the 29 year sentence and will therefore be 65 or 66 years of age when finally released, if he lives that long. Another salty dose handed out by the court was that in the case of Arthur Cochran, a burley negro, who assaulted Mary Kruse, an aged woman near Patton some weeks ago. Just before court adjourned Monday the negro was sentenced to serve 15 years in the Western Penitentiary, making a total sentence for the two men of 44 years and six months. [snip] James E. Hartmann, rape, Gertrude McMurray. Case settled by defendant marrying prosecutrix. [snip] Mary Vukner, a young foreign girl from Conemaugh, entered a plea of guilty to the charge of concealing the birth of an illegitimate child. The girl declared that her child has born dead and that she had no money to bury it. She accordingly wrapped it in a piece of cloth and put it in a cupboard where it was found some weeks later. She was sent to the penitentiary for 15 months.
