Friday, 1 Nov 1912 Volume 45, Number 43 Gallitzin Notes The home of Mrs. John Rhody of Gallitzin, last Monday evening was the scene of a farewell party. The Rhody family will remove to Altoona to make their home. Much Diphtheria Over County County Medical Inspector, Dr. W. E. Matthews of Johnstown, states that an unusually large number of diphtheria cases have been reported from all parts of Cambria county. The total number, he thought, was about 50 or 75. Johnstown itself has almost 50 cases. Accidentally Shot V. J. Patterson, a lineman for the Johnstown Telephone company, was accidentally shot by a friend while sitting on the porch of the Mountain home at Portage on Friday night. A revolver slipped and fell to the floor and was discharged, the bullet passing through Paterson's (sic) right knee just before the knee cap. Auto Accident Here Sunday About 6:30 o'clock Sunday evening a slight automobile accident occurred on Center street in which an elderly lady, a Mrs. Jones of Johnstown, was slightly injured. She was met at the 6:30 car by Charles Luther, with an automobile for the purpose of conveying her to the residence of J. W. Kephart and when the machine was rounding the corner at High and Center streets, the steering gear failed to work properly and instead of going out Center street as was intended, kept turning in a circle until it ran into a tree near the corner, which stopped the machine. The sudden stop caused the windshield to break and the flying glass inflicted severe cuts on the lady's face. The driver was not injured. The machine was slightly damaged. Struck by Trolley Car John Williams of Mineral Point is a patient at the Memorial hospital, Johnstown, suffering of fractures of the arms and ribs and lacerations of the head as a result of being struck by an Ebensburg car on the Southern Cambria Sunday morning. Mr. Williams was standing on the track above the new Salt Lick reservoir at Mineral Point when he was run down by the car, which was in charge of Motorman Taylor Thomas. Williams is quite hard of hearing and as there was a dense fog at that point he neither saw nor heard the car until it was too late to escape. The motorman did not see Williams until a second or two before the accident. The man was thrown off the track and rolled down the hill quite a distance. In Pittsburgh Hospital Mrs. Louis McCloskey of Gallitzin is a patient in the Mercy hospital in Pittsburg where she underwent a serious operation last week. The lady is resting well and her complete recovery is looked for. Insane Patient Taken from Jail At the conclusion of Argument Court here last week, Judge Stephens issued an order for the transfer of all insane patients from the Ebensburg Jail. Sheriff Stutzman and assistants left Monday for Somerset with the following: Nell Leonard, Annie Bolosky, Martin Peterson, William Hamilton, Philip Hertzinger and Walter Lyons. The following were taken to the Cambria County Almshouse: Joseph Soyki, Joseph Hopeka, George Sasko and Joe Kiver. This clears the jail of insane patients to the great relief of the warden, the county commissioners and the directors of the poor. With the departure of the patients the ban on visiting the jail is lifted and the regular rules for visitors are now again in effect. They had been suspended because the effect of promiscuous sightseeing with the patients as objects was not good for the patients nor for the visitors. The warden is now only a jail warden and a great load of responsibly has been lifted from his shoulders.
