The Cambria Freeman. (Ebensburg, Pa.) July 1, 1871
William McMullen, a young man aged about 17 or 18 years, oldest son of our esteemed
friend and patron, Mr. U. A. McMullen, of Johnstown, met with a shocking, and what
will in all probability prove, a fatal accident, in that place on Tuesday last. It
appears that young McMullen who was employed by the Cambria Iron and Steel Company,
got upon the "Echo" engine of that Company for the purpose of taking a short ride
during the interval of his ''spell" from work. After riding a little distance he
jumped from the locomotive on to a pile of ashes at the side of the track, but in
doing so missed his footing and fell back beneath the wheels of the engine which
passed over his right leg at the hip and his left foot at the heal, and also severed
three fingers from his left hand. Dr. Lowman was promptly summoned to attend to his
injuries, and at once amputated his leg, heel and hand. The condition of the
unfortunate young man, who has our earnest sympathies, as has also his greatly
afflicted parents, is of course critical in the extreme, and if he survives his
injuries it will indeed be one of the most Providential of escapes.
