Friday, 11 Jan 1907 Volume 41, Number 2 Aged Man Cremated Theodore Benden, of Barr Township, Perishes in Home No One Near to Help Neighbors of Theodore Benden, an aged man who lived in Barr township, some distance from Nicktown Thursday morning, discovered that he had been burned to death Wednesday night when his house was destroyed. The nearest neighbor lived some miles distant, however, and no one knew of the fire until Thursday. It is believed that Benden met death in an effort to check a blaze which probably had its origin in the kitchen. Finding the fight too much for him, he tried to escape but was so badly burned, he could not even reach the road. The fact that he had on his working clothes indicates that the fire broke out before he had retired for the night. The body was burned to a crisp from the waist up. The remains were turned over to a Barnesboro undertaker and Coroner W. B. Prothero who was notified, directed Deputy Coroner J. C. McMillen of Barnesboro to investigate the case. It is not believed that an inquest will be necessary. The dead man was widely connected in the north of the county. Theodore Benden is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Charlotte Burns, who now lives at Homestead; a brother, John, of Gallitzin township, and the following sons: William of Gallitzin township; George of Homestead; Charles of Tunnelhill and Agatha, in the west.
