DIED - BENDER - A young German named Bernard Bender, whilst digging a 
vault to receive the contents of an adjoining cess pool, in Johnstown, 
and while standing on a ladder and in the act of tapping the privey 
vault, a considerable quantity of the excrement unexpectedly broke 
through, and it is supposed the effiuyia [sic] overcame him and he fell 
in, as his lifeless remains were discovered shortly afterwards with 
head and shoulders buried in the filth.
