All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/cambria/ ________________________________________________ Altoona Mirror Thursday evening, 22 Jul 1948 page 26 Veteran's Body Is Returned to Cresson Home (Special to Altoona Mirror) CRESSON, July 22. - The body of a Cresson World war II veteran, who made the supreme sacrifice at the Anzio beachhead, Italy, will arrive in Cresson at 1.10 o'clock tomorrow afternoon for funeral services and interment. He is Cpl. Orlando Joseph Bianconi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Giovanni Bianconi of 305 Jackson avenue. He was wounded in action May 31, 1944, and died the following day in a field hospital. Cpl. Bianconi was born in Cresson Nov. 20, 1918, a son of Giovanni and Concetti (Bozzo) Bianconi. He was graduated from the Cresson grade schools and attended Cresson High school. He was inducted into service four days after the Japs made the sneak attack at Pearl Harbor, Dec. 11, 1941, and went overseas Aug. 2, 1942, landing in England with a tank destroyers' group. At the time of his death he was assigned to the 601st tank destroyer battalion, attached with the 3rd infantry division. Surviving are his parents and these brothers and sisters: Thomas N. Bianconi of Cresson, Palmy and Matilda at home, Mrs. Mary Tilli and Mrs. Carmella DeBright, both of Wilmington, Del., and Fulvia Bianconi of Altoona. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier's Catholic church, Cresson volunteer fire department and Societa Italiana, St. Pietro Di Roma Beneficial association. Members of Cresson post, American Legion, firing squad, under the direction of T/Sgt. Raymond R. Parrish, and color guards will receive the body when it arrives here by train and escort it to a local funeral home before the casket is removed to the residence.
