(Ebensburg, Pa.) 1867-1938: June 15, 1872 William Carroll, a young man about 26 years of age, was killed by a stroke of lightning, on Wednesday afternoon last, on the level between Planes 4 and 5, in Washington township. He had taken refuge from the rain under a large sugar tree, and the lightning struck the tree, passing down the trunk and struck the deceased on the shoulder, passed down his side and made its exit at his boot, bursting the boot in so doing, killing him instantly. The lifeless remains were found by his mother lying near the scene, who had gone to call him to his supper. It is a singular coincidence that the young man's father was killed very near the same spot by a railroad accident on the old Portage railroad several years ago.
