COLBERT Johnstown Tribune 30 Jun 1943 FORMER LOCAL MAN IS INJURED IN FALL Newton J. Colbert, 54, a former resident here and for the past 37 years a resident of Lorain, O., is in a critical condition in a Lorain hospital. Mr. Colbert fell from a scaffold several days ago while making repairs on his home. X-rays have shown an injury to the spinal column. Mr. Colbert, a son of the late J.W. Colbert and of Mrs. Nancy Colbert, who now resides at 514 Vine St., was employed as a locomotive engineer here in his youth. He went out to Lorain to continue the same work and is now foreman of locomotive engineers at the Lorain, O., plant of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation. He has been active in civic affairs in Lorain and served several terms as a councilman. A brother George, captain of the Johnstown Fire Company, died here about five years ago, and another brother, Sylvester, who died a number of years ago, had been a foreman in the Franklin Mills. A sister, Mrs. Nancy Ling, resides at 514 Vine St., and another sister, Lucy, intermarried with Rev. Robert Ling, resides at Beaver. Mr. Colbert is married and has a daughter. Johnstown Tribune 9 Jul 1943 NEWTON J. COLBERT, INJURED IN FALL, DIES IN LORAIN, O. Former Johnstowner was Son of Mrs. Nancy Colbert of Vine St. Newton J. Colbert, 54, former Johnstowner, died at 12:30 o'clock last night in a Lorain, O., hospital, where he had been a patient for nearly two weeks. Mr. Colbert was removed to the hospital immediately after a fall from a scaffold while making repairs to the upper story of his home. In falling, his back struck the roof of a stoop and his face was injured when it struck a walk. Death was attributed to injury of a cervical vertebra. Funeral services will be held in Lorain at 2 p.m. Monday. Mr. Colbert is survived by his widow and a son. The Lorain resident was a son of the late J. Wesley Colbert, former Johnstown Water Company employee, and of Mrs. Nancy Colbert, 514 Vine St. William Colbert, better known as "Billy the Puddler" and associated with early development of the iron and steel industry here, was Newton Colbert's grandfather. The deceased is the last of three sons of the family to die. A brother, Sylvester, foreman in the Franklin coke plant, died in 1924, and another brother, George, a captain of the Johnstown Fire Department, died in 1934. A sister, Mrs. Nancy Ling, resides at 514 Vine St., and another sister, Lucy, wife of Rev. Robert Ling, resides near Beaver. Mrs. Viola (Colbert) Williams, a third sister, is deceased. Mr. Colbert was a locomotive engineer here. He went to Lorain to work in the same capacity for the plant there of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation. He held the post of foreman of locomotive engineers of the plant at the time of his death.
