Democrat and sentinel: (Ebensburg, Pa.) 1853-1866: August 26, 1853
A boy aged about 13 years, son of William Dougherty, of Washington township, met
with a fatal accident last Saturday. He attempted to ride up Plane 5 on the bumping
beam of a freight car, and about the time the car was starting, observed another car
loose, coming down the plane. He, seeing his danger, jumped from the car, and his
foot striking a stick, threw him under the wheel, which passed over his thigh,
crushing it frightfully. He survived but a short time, suffering the most intense
agony.
