Friday, 17 Nov 1905 Volume 39, Number 45 Boy Crushed Under Wrecked Mine Cars Gallitzin Youth Killed While at Work Second Death in the Family within a Month Gallitzin, Pa., Nov. 16 For the second time within the past three weeks the grim destroyer has visited the home of the Devlin family of this place. Monday, Hugh Devlin Jr. was instantly killed in a collision of mine cars at colliery No. 19 of the Pennsylvania Coal and Coke company, his tragic death being the second death in the family. Young Devlin was employed as a rope rider at No. 19 colliery. About 11 o'clock Monday morning as he was riding into the mine on a trip of empty cars, one of the empties suddenly left the track and the whole train piled up in a mass of wreckage inside the mine. When young Devlin's body was recovered it was found that his one leg was broken and other injuries about the head had been so severe that death must have been almost instantaneous. One of the sad features about the accident is the fact that young Devlin's father, Hugh Devlin, Sr., was the engineer at the throttle of the stationary engine that was used in hauling the trip which proved fatal to his son. The boy's mother is prostrated and three attending physicians fear that she cannot recover from the shock. About three weeks ago, Mary, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Devlin, and one of the most popular young ladies in this section, died quite suddenly from typhoid fever. She was about 22 years of age. The brother who as killed in the mine accident Monday was about 13 years of age. He is survived by his parents and two younger brothers, both at home.
