Friday, 20 Jul 1906 Volume 40, Number 28 Gibbs Downey and Mrs. J. B. Downey Gutwald Gibbs Downey, aged 23 years, died at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Dorsey Libby at Hastings Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Death was due to gangrene resultant from an injury inflicted upon his right ear some time ago. His condition became serious and Drs. Rice and Hagey of Hastings decided to perform an operation. This was done several days ago but the physicians entertained little hope of the patient's recovery. A brother of the deceased, who was employed as a hostler by Dr. F. C. Jones, of this place, died last March of pneumonia. He is survived by Miss Susan of Hastings; Anna, married and living in Pittsburg; both sisters and an aunt, Miss Jane Seeseman, who is employed at the Metropolitan Hotel, Ebensburg. Miss Seeseman was mother and father to the deceased, his parents having died when he was yet an infant, when she assumed the responsibility of caring for him until he grew up to manhood. Some months ago he left Ebensburg and went to Hastings where he secured employment, making his home with his married sister there. The remains were brought to this place Tuesday afternoon by Undertaker H. J. Easley of Hastings. The funeral was held yesterday morning at 4 o'clock, the interment being in the Chest Springs cemetery. Mrs. Gutwald, wife of J. B. Gutwald, formerly a Johnstown and Windber hotelman, but now of Hoboken, N. J., was a sister of the deceased. She died May 22 of this year, but local relatives learned of her demise only recently.
