Thursday, 25 Dec 1890 Burned to Death. From the Johnstown Tribune of December 24: About 2 o'clock this morning fire broke out in the residence of Peter Ermire, an aged resident of Wilmore. David O'Hara, a liveryman, whose house adjoined Ermire's, was awakened by the crackling of the flames, and by the time he succeeded in arousing his family his own house was ablaze. He got the members of his household out and saved some of his effects, but the flames had gained such headway that nothing could be done to save either his house or the one occupied by Emire [sic]. The latter building was, in fact, almost consumed before the neighborhood was fully aware of the existence of the fire, hence it was that Mr. Ermire, who, presumably, was asleep and knew nothing of his peril, was not rescued from his burning home, but perished in the flames, his charred body being found in the ruins this forenoon about half past 8 o'clock. Deceased was about 65 years of age. He was the sole occupant of the house. One of his daughters is the wife of Mr. Fletcher George, the well known resident of Lilly. Another daughter is night operator in the tower at Lilly and makes her home at Mr. George's. His son John is train dispatcher in the Altoona yard. A few weeks ago one of his sons was killed on a western railroad and his remains were brought to Wilmore for burial. Just how the fire originated is not positively known, but it is presumed that an exploding lamp was the cause. Both the burned buildings were of wood. The one occupied by Mr. O'Hara belonged to Mr. Wendroth. The loss is estimated at $1,500.
