Friday, 9 Feb 1906 Volume 40, Number 5 William E. Evans The following account of the demise of a former well known Ebensburg citizen is taken from the Fontanelle, Ia. OBSEVER of Feb. 1st. The deceased was a brother of the late Jeremiah Evans of this place. The death of William E. Evans in his 88th year, occurred at the home of his son, Sanders, in Richland township, Thursday. Thus peacefully ended a long life. Though foreign born, most of his life was spent in the United States and 35 years of it in Adair county. In politics he was a Whig, a Know Nothing and a Republican. He voted for William Henry Harrison in 1840 and followed down the line to Roosevelt, preserving a consistent and unfailing record. William E. Evans died January 24, 1906, aged 87 years, 8 months and 16 days. He was born May 8, 1818 in Montgomery Shire, North Wales. Emigrated with his parents to the United States in 1830 when 12 years of age, landed at the city of Washington D. C., where they resided for two years when they moved and located six miles north of Ebensburg, Cambria county, Pa. He was married Dec. 2, 1844 to Mary Anna Williams. To this union were born 11 children, five sons and six daughters; being deceased: Mary Jane in infancy and Mrs. W. J. Ewing in 1895. Mr. Evans joined the North Ebensburg Welsh Baptist church in early manhood and was a faithful member until he moved with his wife and family to Iowa in 1870 where he located on a farm in Richland township in Adair county. He leaves an aged wife who was sick in bed and unable to attend the funeral, nine children, 38 grandchildren and 27 great- grandchildren to mourn the loss of a loving husband and a kind father. Mr. and Mrs. Evans having lived together as husband and wife for the long period of 62 years and one month and 52 days. Death resulted from exhaustion due to senility. All was done that could be done by loving relatives and friends during his late illness. Interment at Pleasant Grove cemetery Saturday January 27. Services conducted by Rev. W. H. Doyle of the Fontanelle M. E. Church.
