Friday, 9 Dec 1910 Volume 44, Number 48 Aged Man Hears Call From Over Dark River James Gallagher, Oldest Resident of the County, is Dead James Gallagher, the oldest resident of Cambria County and possibly of the state, died at 9:40 o'clock Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Maloney, Lloyd Street, at the age of 105 years, ten months and three days. His death was sudden in that he became ill only Sunday but the breakdown was complete and the end was known to be only a few hours away. Mr. Gallagher was born in Dunglow, County Donegal, Ireland, February 2, 1805, one of a family of eighteen and was the last of that number to pass away. He came to America sixty years ago and from New York where he landed, went to Beaver Meadows, Luzerne County, where he remained two years. He followed railroad construction, working in Blairsville and Johnstown, coming to Ebensburg in 1860-61 when the Indiana branch was built. He had lived in Ebensburg since that time. For a number of years he was employed by Collins Brothers, prominent railroad contractors at that time. Mr. Gallagher was married in Dunglow, Ireland, sixty-two years ago to Miss Alice O'Donnel. She died thirty four years ago, leaving her husband and one daughter, Mrs. Mary Maloney. The only other relatives surviving the aged man are two granddaughters, Anna, wife of J. Wallace Benham of Cleveland, O.; and Miss Alice Maloney of Ebensburg. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Gallagher possessed a wonderful vitality and was remarkably well preserved, which was the subject of general comment. The advancing years seemed to make little impress upon his constitution and until Sunday his health appeared to be good. He became ill suddenly and the dissolution was general. Mr. Gallagher was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church, the Rev. Father H. M. O'Neill pastor. The funeral was held Wednesday morning.
