Thursday, 21 Apr 1864 Volume 5, Number 30 John Glass About three weeks ago a young man named John Glass, son of Mr. John J. Glass, of Loretto, this county, aged seventeen years, enlisted into the army. He was a bright, intelligent lad and ever since the breaking out of the war had harbored a desire to go soldiering. This his parents objected to, not that they found fault with the spirit of patriotism which prompted such a step, but rather because they thought him too young to endure the hardships and fatigues of military life. On the last call, however, he overcame their scruples and accordingly enlisted in Co. E, 84th Pa. Vols. He was sent to the barracks at Carlisle. Hale and hearty when he went forth, we thought him destined for a long and useful life. But in the next news we have of him is that he is dead – died at Carlisle, Tuesday, 5th inst., after an illness of only twenty-four hours. His disease was inflammation of the brain. His father, who had been telegraphed to that his son was dying, hastened to minister to his last moments, but before he reached Carlisle the mortal remains of the son had been committed to the keeping of mother earth and nothing remained to the parent but the sorrowful consolation of bedewing the new-made grave with bitter tears. Thus, after an experience of barely one week in the tented field, another patriot-soldier has been "gathered in" let us hope to glory.
