Friday, 14 Sep 1906 Volume 40, Number 36 Rev. Dr. Owen James Dead The Rev. Dr. Owen James, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Johnstown, died suddenly at noon Sunday while on his way home from his morning service. Dr. James was ordained a minister in 1879. He was pastor following that of the North Church in Washington D. C.: the First Baptist Church in Scranton, Penna.; Hatboro near Philadelphia; Hollidaysburg, Titusville and Johnstown. From 1896 until 1898 he was president of Roger Williams University in Nashville, Tenn. The remains were taken to Scranton for interment Wednesday. Dr. James was born in South Wales in 1847. He came to the United States when a young man and entered Bucknell University at Lewisburg from which he was graduated in 1876. He was graduated from Crozer Theological Seminary in 1879. In 1895 he received the degree of doctor of divinity from the University of Rochester, Rochester, N. Y. Dr. James was one of the best known Baptist ministers in Pennsylvania.
