Death of Mrs. Martha M. Jones 

One of the oldest and best known residents of Johnstown 
passed away Monday at 1:30 a.m. in the person of Mrs. 
Martha M. Jones, who died at her home at No. 115 McConaughy 
Street, Fifteenth Ward, aged eighty-three years.  Her death 
was due to old age.  She had enjoyed fairly good health 
until a short time ago and about eight days ago was 
compelled to take her bed.  After that she sank rapidly 
until her death.

The deceased whose maiden name was Martha Reese, was born 
in Ebensburg and was the daughter of Thomas and Ellen 
Reese, both of whom have passed to their reward many years 
ago. She was married in 1848 to Robert Jones who was killed 
twenty-one years ago while at work at one of the blast 
furnaces of the Cambria Steel Company, having been crushed 
under a large piece of ore which fell upon him.

Shortly after Mr. and Mrs. Jones were married they moved 
into a house on what was known as the "Island," where the 
Gautier Mills are now located. From there they moved to 
McConaughy Street, where Mrs. Jones died.

Mrs. Jones is survived by the following children:  Mary, 
wife of August Aust; and Ida, wife of Robert Watson of 
Cincinnati, O.; Alice, wife of Rowland Karchmer of Brosser 
Hollow; and Clara, wife of Jacob Owens of Washington 
Street.  Two children died in infancy and Samuel R., a son, 
died six months ago at his home in Pittsburg.  The deceased 
is also survived by twelve grandchildren and four great 
grandchildren and the following sisters:  Mrs. Jane Ann 
Tudor of Ebensburg and Mrs. Catharine Eykes of Butler 
County.  Ellen Davis, wife of Thomas Davis, a sister, and 
Thomas Reese, a brother, died at Ebensburg about ten years 
ago.

The funeral took place Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from 
the Jones' residence with interment in Grand View cemetery.
