Mrs. Benjamin Jones 

Mary P. Jones, wife of Ex-County Commissioner Benjamin 
Jones, died at the Jones home, one mile and a half north of 
Ebensburg, along the Carrolltown road in Cambria Township, 
between 1 and 2 o'clock Saturday morning, aged sixty-four 
years, five months and two days.  Mrs. Jones' health began 
to fail about New Year's but she was able to be around 
until a few weeks ago, when she took her bed.  The cause of 
her demise was disease of the spleen.

The deceased was born at Ebensburg March 1, 1843, and was 
the youngest of a family of six boys and two girls.  Her 
sister, Mrs. Eliza Walters, widow of Dr. Walter Winston 
Walters, who lives in Johnstown, was at her bedside during 
her late illness.  David J. Jones, her only surviving 
brother, resides at No. 2, Venango street, Westmont.  The 
brothers who preceded Mrs. Jones to the grave were the Hon. 
John P. Jones who died at Terra Alta, W. Va., on September 
20, 1900; and Thomas D. Jones, a veteran of the Eleventh 
Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserve Corps, who expired at 
Dayton, O., on March 18, 1902.  Another brother, Daniel D. 
Jones served in Company A, Cambria Guards. He died May 5, 
1864.  Two other brothers died in infancy. 

The parents of Mrs. Benjamin Jones, Daniel J. and Mary 
David Jones, were natives of South Wales, where her father 
was born on May 9, 1806, and her mother on May 28, 1801.  
They were married in February, 1839, and seven years later 
Daniel J. Jones came to America, leaving his wife and four 
children in Wales.  Two years later they also crossed the 
Atlantic and joined their husband and father in Pittsburg, 
where they remained until April, 1840, when the family 
located in Ebensburg.  Mr. Jones died in September, 1893, 
and his wife August 2, 1875.

Mary P. Jones was baptized by the Rev. David Lewis, a 
minister of the Welsh Presbyterians.  She attended 
subscription schools at the county seat for a number of 
years and after having received a fair education, remained 
at home [words missing].  She joined the Welsh Calvinistic 
Methodist church in girlhood and has since been a 
consistent member both in principle and practice.  The farm 
on which she died was bequeathed to her by her father.  She 
and Benjamin Jones were married at Ebensburg on June 20, 
1877, by the Rev. John Hughes, a Calvinistic Minister.  Mr. 
Jones survives her, but no children.

The funeral took place at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon. The 
Rev. William Bryn Jones of the Ebensburg Calvinist 
Methodist church, her pastor, conducted the obsequies.  The 
remains were laid to rest in Lloyd Cemetery.  A large 
member of relatives from Johnstown and the surrounding 
vicinity attended the services.
