Litzinger Answers Call Last Surviving Cambria Veteran of Mexican War Capt. Dennis Augustus Litzinger, a native of Cambria County and a veteran of both the Mexican and Civil Wars, died at his home at Grafton, Wednesday, Oct. 22, aged nearly 86 years. Capt. Litzinger was born near Lilly, this county, Oct. 31, 1823 where he resided until 1855 when he moved to West Virginia. He was married in 1851 to Miss Eliza Carland of Loretto. Sixteen children were born to this union, seven of whom survive. Mrs. Litzinger died in the year 1890 at Grafton. The Captain was a frequent visitor to Northern Cambria County where he was well known and highly respected. His last trip to Ebensburg was to attend the funeral of his relative, ex-Sheriff John A. Blair. He was the last surviving member of the famous Cambria Guards, which saw service in the Mexican War. Capt. Litzinger's remains were interred at Grafton.
