McDonald, 2d Dragons, United States Army, in the 34th year of his age. The lamented deceased was born near Ebensburg in the year 1818... In the year 1832 he entered Mt. St. Mary's College, Emmittsburg, Md...and graduated with high honors. In 1837 he was appointed by this district to the Military School at West Point and graduated in 1841 with marked distinction. He was commissioned in the 2d Dragoons in which regiment he saw much active service on the western frontier and in Texas, and by his gallant bearing and a soldier-like conduct, gained the respect and esteem with all those with whom he became associated. At the commencement of the Mexican War, Gen. Twiggs judiciously selected him for his Aide-de-Camp, and his presence at the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, and at every engagement until the close of the war, with the exception of Buena Vista, has shed a halo of glory around his name that can never be effaced from the memory of those familiarly acquainted with his history...
