Wednesday, May 1, 1872 MAKIN - On Monday last, a sad accident occurred at Berg & Son's saw mill, about three miles west of Ebensburg, to a young man by the name of Samuel Makin, aged twenty years, who had been employed by Messrs. Berk & Son's, and who worked in the capacity of an off-bearer. It seems some obstruction preventing the flow of water which carried away the saw-dust, had got into the pipe; he went below to open it, and while in the act, it is supposed that he slipped and fell against the circular saw, while in motion, it cutting off his right arm, and opening his head in a frightful manner. He died in about fifteen minutes after the accident occurred. An inquisition was held over the body, by E. J. Waters, a Justice of the Peace, of Ebensburg Borough. Verdict - accidental death. Johnstown Tribune.
