Bartholomew McCabe 

Bartholomew McCabe was born October 29, 1829 in County 
Cavan, Ireland.  He came to America at the age of 18 and 
learned the machinist trade in Philadelphia.  Later he 
became a stationary engineer at Fallen Timber and a 
machinist in the PRR shops in Altoona.  In 1860 he removed 
to Johnstown and secured employment in the mills.

In 1867 he became fireman on a locomotive and was promoted 
to engineer in the autumn of the same year.  He ran on the 
main line until 1876 when he was placed on the Ebensburg 
branch. He made his regular run there until 1895 when he 
retired because of failing health.

He was on the engine that first went through the old 
Portage tunnel on the trial trip.

Mr. McCabe was twice married, the first time to Christina 
Newry and the second time to Bridget O'Connor.  He was the 
father of 12 children, 7 of whom survive – John, James, 
William and Michael of Pittsburg; Christiana at home; 
Margaret, wife of Joseph Shoemaker of Mifflin county and 
Mary, wife of George Banker of Goshen, N. J.  He is also 
survived by his wife.

The veteran engineer went to the seashore this summer and 
seemed to be much improved in health.  However, on 
returning home he suffered a physical relapse from the 
effects of which he died last Saturday at home.

The funeral took place at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning from 
the Catholic church, conducted by Father O'Neill.
