Mrs. McGuire was a daughter of George Glass and Susan Daugherty and was born near Munster, Cambria county, January 29th, 1820. She was the twelfth child of a family of thirteen children and like almost all of her family she possessed the vitality to sustain a remarkably long life. The following brothers and sisters, with the deceased, constituted the family of George Glass: (1) Ann, who was the oldest, born in 1798, and married to John Myers in 1817, and of which union Sheriff James Myers; Susan, who was intermarried with Michael Hasson, Esq.; Mary Magdalen, who is intermarried with Joshua Parrish of Ebensburg; and Matilda, George, John, Henry, Margaret, Catherine, William and Martha were the children. (2) Margaret, born in 1801, married in 1822 to James McGough and to which union nine children were born. (3) Mary, born in 1802, and intermarried with Michael Dan Mageehan, Esq., in 1833, and to this union there were several children of whom Susan (Mrs. Dorsey King) and Maggie (Mrs. Lew Baumer) of Johnstown still survive. (4) Susan, born in 1804, intermarried with Thomas Gallagher and who died without issue at the age of 94 years at her home, "Pine Grove," in Munster township in 1898. (5) Jacob, born in 1806 and intermarried with Jane Gorman in 1839 and in which union a large family was born, viz.: Annie (Mrs. Wm. Todd); Susan (Mrs. Patrick Burns); Tillie (Mrs. Robert Brady); Ellie (Mrs. Chas. Sharbaugh); Gussie, Demetrius and Gorman. McManamy. (7) George, born in 1810 and married to Margaret Brown and to which union the following children were born, viz.: Andrew, William, George, Jacob, John, Mrs. Mary McDermott, Mrs. Susan Flanagan, Mrs. Rose Shearer and Mrs. Maggie Brolley. (8) John J., born in 1812 and intermarried with Eliza J. Trotter and of which union, Robert T. Glass and Mrs. Jane Durbin are surviving children. (9) James. (10) Edward, born in 1816, and intermarried with Margaret Kane; after her death with Mary Ann Brolley of whom Maud and Irene Glass of this place, are children. (11) William, born in 1818 and intermarried with Sarah McMullen and to which union were born the following children: Winifield, Valentine; W. Edgar, Frank, Sheridan, Gallitzin, Annie, Laura and Emma. After the death of his wife, Sarah, he married Mrs. Christy of Gallitzin. (12) Augustine, born in 1822, intermarried with Alice McHugh and of which union, Mary Josephine survives. After the death of his wife, Alice, he remarried and three children were born to this second union. And, (13) Sarah, the subject of this sketch, was born as herein before noticed, near Munster, Cambria County, January 29th, 1820. On July 20th 1841, she was united in marriage with Michael McGuire, familiarly known as "little Mike McGuire," a son of "Squire Luke" McGuire and grandson of Captain Michael McGuire. They were married by Rev. P. H. Lemke, first successor to Prince Gallitzin as Pastor of Loretto. Until the death of Michael L. McGuire, her husband, on Dec. 24th, 1852, they lived on the McGuire "Homestead Farm" just east of Loretto, but from that time until a few years ago, Mrs. McGuire lived in the Borough of Loretto. To this union six children were born: Mary Regina, intermarried with Thomas Callan; Alice, intermarried with Felix Beck; Henry Gibson, who died when a child; J. Heyden, intermarried with Mary J. Coons; George L., intermarried with Mathilda Luther and Celestine A., intermarried with Mary Melhorn. Of these, Mrs. Callan, George L. of Allegheny township; J. Heyden of Cresson and Celestine A. of Johnstown still survive their mother and as well also survive, 32 grandchildren and 38 great grandchildren. Mrs. McGuire, or "Aunt Sally," as she was familiarly known to many people was a remarkable lady and possessed many admirable characteristics. She was fond of children and the company of the younger people generally whom she delighted to entertain by telling good stories of olden times. She was a consistent observer of the modern ways of the world and thus kept herself from becoming old. She was charitable in both language and deed and endeared herself to all with whom she associated. She ever maintained a deep and careful interest in the material and spiritual welfare of her children and direct descendants and collateral relatives. She was an exemplary Christian and a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, having been baptized by and received her early training from the Sainted Gallitzin, first Pastor of Loretto. Her funeral took place from St. Michael's at Loretto, after a High Mass of Requiem by Father Ferdinand Kittell on Sunday, Dec. 30th at which an unusually large gathering of relatives and friends was assembled. The pallbearers were six of her grandchildren, viz.: Henry F. and George McGuire and Thos. F. Callan of Cresson; Walter Beck of Gallitzin; Henry Callan of Loretto and Wm. A. McGuire, Esq., of Ebensburg. Interment was made in the old cemetery not many yards from the site of the first church (log) at Loretto, erected in 1799, in which she had been baptized by him who first sang the "Gloria in Excelsis" there at midnight on Christmas eve one score year before.
