Aged Loretto Man Passes to His Reward 
Peter A. Melhorn Victim of Bright's Disease and 
Complications

Peter A. Melhorn, a son of one of the earliest settlers of 
this section of Cambria County, and at the time of his 
death, one of Loretto's oldest and best known residents, 
died at his home Wednesday after an illness of Bright's 
disease and complications incident to old age that caused a 
gradual sinking within the last month.  He was 79 years of 
age.

Mr. Melhorn, as he approached the age of an octogenarian, 
was an exceedingly active man and was able to be about 
daily, usually in the company of men scores of years 
younger than himself.  He was summoned to Ebensburg as a 
juror the first week of December term of court and appeared 
to be in his usual health, but after his return home he was 
taken ill and his decline was noticeable from that time.

The father of Mr. Melhorn was a native of Germany and 
located in Allegheny Township more than 80 years ago.  The 
entire life of the deceased was spent in that locality with 
the exception of a term of enlistment in the Union army 
during the War of the Rebellion.  Mr. Melhorn was married 
more than 50 years ago to a Miss Douglass, of Allegheny 
Township, daughter of one of the pioneer settlers of 
Cambria County, who died about four years ago. Two sons of 
the venerable couple, William and Sylvester and one 
daughter, Emma, are dead, the latter expiring in the 
Memorial Hospital in Johnstown about 12 years ago. The 
surviving children are Jonathan Melhorn and Mrs. R. A. 
Glass of Cresson; Mrs. C. A. McGuire of Johnstown; Harry of 
McKean County; and Edward and Charles of Allegheny 
Township.  Mr. Melhorn had one brother, Jerome, and a 
sister, who located in Allegheny County many years ago and 
as they have not been heard from in a long time, it is 
generally believed that they are dead.

The funeral took place at 10 o'clock Friday morning from 
St. Michael's Catholic Church of which the deceased had 
been a member for many years.
