John Mellon Dead

John Mellon, for many years a resident of Northern Cambria 
County, died at his home in Nokesville, Va., on Sunday 
morning, September 22, at 10 o'clock of dropsy, after an 
extended illness.

Mr. Mellon was a native of Country Derry, Ireland, and came 
to this country with his parents when but eight years old, 
locating near Chest Springs.  He was the son of Redmond and 
Mrs. Bridget Mellon, both deceased, and was 69 years of age 
at the time of his demise.

His boyhood was spent near Chest Springs and in 1859 he 
built the first saw mill on Upper Chest Creek in Elder 
Township, which he operated until 1874.  In that year he 
went to Virginia, where he purchased a large farm and has 
been a resident of the Old Dominion since that time. A 
Republican in politics, he was appointed postmaster of 
Nokesville during President McKinley's first administration 
and held the position until he died.

Besides his wife, who is a daughter of Richard Nagle of 
Susquehanna Township, he is survived by ten sons and two 
daughters and the following sisters and bothers:  James 
Mellon and Mrs. Mary Noonan of Patton; Philip Mellon of 
Johnstown; Mrs. Frank Burgoon and Miss Annie Mellon of 
Chest Springs and Mrs. Austin Stalb of Altoona.
