All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/cambria/ _________________________________________ Tyrone Daily Herald 8 Sep 1924 page 3 JOHN O'CONNER Retired Baggage Master Died In Johnstown Hospital John O'Connor, a retired employee of the Tyrone Division, Pennsylvania Railroad company, died at 8 o'clock Saturday evening at the Mercy hospital, Johnstown, of acute indigestion. He had been ill for the past month from heart trouble, and suffered from indigestion only a few days, being admitted to the hospital last Wednesday. The deceased celebrated his 76th birthday June 26, and was a native of Dublin, Ireland. He came to this country when a boy and located in Clearfield county. He entered the service of the P. R. R. company on the Tyrone division as a water carrier in 1861. In 1864, he was a track walker; 1867, a station keeper; 1868, a bridge watchman; 1869, passenger and freight brakeman; 1873, a passenger brakeman and conductor; October, 1876, he made baggage master; in 1879 he was made a brakeman again, and on December 15, 1881 he was promoted to baggage master, remaining in that capacity until he retired on July 1, 1918. Besides his daughter, Mrs. Simler, with whom he resided in Johnstown, the deceased is survived by the following children: Mrs. D. V. Redding, Philadelphia; W. T. O'Conner of Ohio and Charles F. O'Conner of Peking, China; a brother, Patrick O'Conner of Williamsport, and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Ryan of New Castle and Mrs. Ella Pitzer of Wilmington, Del. The body was shipped to Philadelphia last evening on the 5:04 train. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow morning.
