All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/pafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Mary Bayliss mbartfx@aol.com December 8, 2007, 7:22 am Altoona Mirror 20 Apr 1898 CHRIST O'DOWD DEAD Christ O'Dowd, of Tunnelhill, the young man who fell asleep while setting on the track at the east end of Gallitzin tunnel early Sunday morning and was run down by a freight train, died at the hospital last evening at 5:45 o'clock as the result of injuries received. His right leg was crushed from the knee to the thigh, his left hand mangled and his face and head lacerated. His death was not unexpected and his relatives were with him when the end came. The deceased was born at Lilly, Cambria county, on September 17, 1875 and was consequently in his twenty third year. He was a son of Patrick and Matilda O'Dowd, now residing at Tunnelhill, and, besides his parents, he leaves a wife, a 2-year-old daughter; also three sisters, Mrs. Fred Larue and Mrs. Ed Litzinger, of Tunnelhill, and Mrs. Will Riley, of Gallitzin. He was employed on the Pittsburg division since February 2 as a brakeman. The remains were prepared for burial by Undertaker Lafferty and sent to his former home this morning. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning. Mass will be celebrated at 9 o'clock in St. Patrick's church, of which he was a member; interment at Tunnelhill.
