James G. Rhodes, of whose injuries brief note was made last week, died at the family home on Piney Creek, Sunday evening, aged 27 years and 11 days. As before stated, he was on his way home Monday evening of last week from the stave mill where he was employed. He and Clarence Chamberlain were riding horseback and were going at a somewhat rapid pace and were in advance of some of the other mill hands who were following, also on their way home after completing theirs days work at the mill. Among these was Herman Smith who was an eye witness to the mishap which was followed by fatal results. Rhodes was riding a spirited horse. The right rein broke leaving only the left side of the rein to guide the animal, which soon became unmanageable. Their way led through an open field where stands a lone cherry tree, near the path temporarily used as a roadway. Near the tree lay a large stone partly hidden by the snow which the horse struck with the hoof of one of his fore legs, causing the animal to pitch forward. As he did so, the right side of his rider's head struck a limb of the tree about the thickness of a man's arm with such force as to break the limb and cut a long gash on his forehead and right temple. The force also threw him against the tree, bruising his left side from his neck to his thigh and he dropped in the snow at the foot of the tree unconscious. Chamberlain was ahead, having passed the tree before the accident. Smith hurried to Rhodes side and found him helpless, and his jaws set as in death. He removed him to his home where he regained consciousness, asked how badly he was hurt, and that a doctor be sent for. He was getting along as well as could be expected and was apparently improving until Saturday evening when there was a sudden change in his condition and he died the following evening as above stated. Mr. Rhodes was the only son of Paul and Catherine Rhodes. His father died in October, 1891. His mother is living, also three sisters: Mrs. H. H. Lykens, of this place; Mrs. John D. Smith, of Piney Creek; and Mrs. Clarence Merritts of Altoona. About two years ago, he was united in marriage with Stella Ritchey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Ritchey, who with two little children survive him. The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Services were held in the Smithfield church conducted by Rev. W. C. Slough, assisted by Rev. C. M. Aurand. Interment in graveyard on Jacob Rhodes farm. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/ File size: 3.0 Kb
