Wednesday, 24 Dec 1873 ROBB - Mr. Augustus Robb, a prominent citizen of Johnstown, whilst laboring under a temporary fit of insanity, committed suicide on Wednesday last. We gather the following particulars connected with the sad affair from the Johnstown Voice: For some days past Mr. Augustus Robb, a prominent citizen of the Fifth ward this city, has been suffering from an illness of a character that to some extent affected his mind, but not to a degree to cause in the minds of his friends fears for his personal safety. Tuesday night James Robb, brother of deceased, remained in his room and shared his bed. The bed was in an upper chamber and near a window looking into the back yard. Mr. Robb occupied the side of the bed farthest from the window. About five o'clock Wednesday morning, Mr. Robb desired his companion to allow him to lie in his side of the bed - in other words to change sides with him - this apparently simple request was complied with, and in about ten minutes after, Mr. Robb, suddenly drew himself up in the bed and sprang through the window, carrying the sash with him. This act was so sudden and unexpected that before James Robb could recover from the surprise, and descended to the yard, Augustus had disappeared in the darkness. Search for the missing man was at once instituted in every direction, and vigorously prosecuted until about eleven o'clock when a party searching found his body opposite the Blast Furnace, having floated nearly one mile down Stoney Creek, life being quite extinct.
