MAN RUN DOWN BY CAR William Ruffing, 18, Dies in Altoona Hospital; Injured Sunday. LILLY – William Ruffing, 18, of Lilly R.D. died last night in Mercy Hospital in Altoona, a victim of spinal meningitis and injuries suffered Sunday when he was struck by an automobile on Route 53 near Lilly. Meningitis developed after his removal to the hospital. Ruffing suffered a fracture of the skull and severe lacerations of the left arm when he was hit by a car driven by Bruce Miller, 22, of South Fork. Miller told Coroner Patrick McDermott and State Motor Police that Ruffing was walking in the center of the highway when he first noticed him. Miller said he drove the car onto the berm of the road in an effort to avoid striking the pedestrian. William Ruffing was a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ruffing and was born in Kentport, Pa., on January 24, 1923. His mother preceded him in death. Private funeral services probably will be conducted Thursday by Rev. E. A. Miles, pastor of the Portage Evangelical Church. Interment will be in the Mt. Union Cemetery under the direction of A. F. Tickerhoof, local mortician.
