RUTLEDGE OF HAMMER AVENUE Funeral services for Mrs. Maude C. Rutledge, 67, wife of Campbell Rutledge of 161 Hammer Avenue, Eighth Ward, whose death occurred at 6:10 o'clock yesterday morning in Memorial Hospital, will be held tomorrow. Services will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Rutledge home by Rev. David K. Allen, Ph.D., pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Interment in Grandview Cemetery will be directed by the John Henderson Company. Mrs. Rutledge became a hospital patient February 9 and underwent an operation February 21. Her condition had been critical for several days. Mrs. Rutledge was born in Huntingdon December 28, 1871, a daughter of John C. and Mary Ellen (Cogan) Smith. She came to Johnstown in 1893 and was a member of the second class of nurses to graduate from Conemaugh Valley Memorial Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1899. She was elected superintendent of Cambria Hospital in 1900 and continued to hold the position until her marriage. Miss Maude C. Smith and Campbell Rutledge, a member of one of Johnstown's oldest and most prominent families, were married September 11, 1901, by Rev. C. C. Hays, then pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Besides her husband Mrs. Rutledge leaves a son, Campbell Rutledge Jr., located at Cornin, N.Y., and a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Belle Smith, at home. She also leaves three grandchildren - Joanna, Shirley and William Smith. She was a sister of Mrs. John E. Jones, Bellevue. Another sister, Mrs. George Evans, Chicago, preceded her in death. Mrs. Rutledge was a member of the Woman's Association of the First Presbyterian Church and of the Centurion Bible Class. She formerly served as a member of the board of directors of the Y.W.C.A and was an active member of Cambria Court 27, Order of Amaranth. Archie Claar Obit Collection, vol. 15, page 2, March 23, 1939
